  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I wanted a VBAC with my second child and didn't have one. This was because of extremely high blood pressure and the baby had to come out right away. The blood pressure was causing kidney and liver damage. My doctor doesn't induce after caesareans, so I needed another caesarean.

I guess my advice would be to start praying into it. ALso to have a supportive doctor, but to be realistic about it too.

If you can't have a VBAC it isn't the end of the world, what really matters is health of mum and bub.

I did. The only advice I can give is don't fight the pain, the more tensed up you are the more it will hurt. If you want a blow by blow (truthful I promise I wont over dramatie) account PM me and I will gladly tell you. By the way mine was easy and I would do it again tomorrow!

The pain isn't really what I'm worried about. I labored for 20 hours before the c-section the first time and it took 17 hours to be far enough along for an epidural. What I'm most worried about is laboring for a long time and then ending up with a c-section anyway. The recovery was just awful the first time. I'm wondering what I can do through-out the pregnancy to make the labor go smoother.

This will sound awful but I didn't do anything special when I was pregnant, all I did was not eat eggs and seafood.

My labour was 13 hrs in all, the really painful bit lasted an hour and I didn't have an epidural or an episiotomy. Maybe things are different over here, but unless you go private you only get a C section as a very last resort. I got through mine on the gas and air and 1 injection of pethadine.

All I cn say is keep your self as mobile and fit as possible all through.

I had a VBAC last year and it was great and in my opinion the only way to have a baby. I didn't deliver my first, she was given to me via c-section because I just couldn't birth a big baby (this was from a dr/midwife team). Switched drs and hospitals and had my VBAC and my second DD was a full pound bigger than my first!!!!! I didn't do anything to prepare I read some books and researched online. I didn't do classes or anything either. I did prepare a Birth plan though and my dr was very supportive. I did have gestational diabetes with my second pregnancy but controlled it with diet. I went in to the hospital (4 days after my due date) was induced at 8am I recieved an epidural (I hadn't planned on one but was not prepared for pitocin induced contractions) between 6 and 8 hours later and I had her at 11pm and was gone from the hospital at 11pm the next night (I only stayed 24 hours). I did have an episotomy because my DD's heart started some decels but I didn't and never had any soreness or anything like the horror stories I heard. This is the short of my birth story :)

Ohiomom, that kind of sounds like my situation. My first was 9lbs, 4 oz. The doctors think that's why I didn't dilate. (20 hours of hard labor after my water broke, and I was only at 5 cm). I have the same doctor this time. He has instructed me to make a smaller baby this time my limiting my weight gain to 20 pounds. So far I've lost 2! Anyway, I did take a Bradley class last time and had a birth plan. Besides taking up smoking, I'm not sure what else to do.

I never went into labor :( I was coereced into my c-section. I would have preferred 20 hours of labor though to that. :) There is no way you can force your body to make a smaller baby, have you searched for a new dr? Not trying to step on toes but this dr sounds like one who would jump right to a section if something indicated a 'big' baby. By the way ultrasounds are almost always off by a couple of pounds when 'guessing' baby's weight so be careful by going by those. I lost 40lbs while pregnant with my second and she still ended up at 9lbs 2oz. I cut my refined sugars, no regular soda, watched how much pasta I ate, switched from white pasta and bread to wheat, etc. I also say walk or even step up on the housework, that counts as exercise too.

I would have to agree with the persons post above me. I do not think it is wise to only gain 20 lbs during pregancy. Could you find someone else that will not use these scare tactics. That is what it seems that he is doing, i could be wrong, but this is my take on it. Do you have another doctor that is VBAC friendly that you could go to?

Here is a website that covers a lot of the issues regarding VBAC. There is also a VBAC discussion link at the bottom of the page.

Hope this is of some help. Good luck with your pregnancy! God Bless!

My husband and I have talked about whether we should change doctors and we really don't see a need. My OB is actually supportive of doing the VBAC and even said during the first one that I was a perfect candidate for a VBAC. Apparently, my anatomy is "textbook". :) Regarding the weight gain limit, that was also the guideline he gave me the first time around. I really don't have a problem with it in theory, although in practice it maybe difficult. I am already overweight (5'7" tall and weigh 175) and that in itself can cause problems with delivery, that's why I really do want to keep my weight down. Also, my OB has never said that gaining only 20 pounds will ensure a smaller baby, but it is the only thing that I can control that could possibly impact the size of the baby.

I know two people who tried to have a vaginal birth after having a C-Section the first time around. One went okay and she had her second child vaginally, while the other thought she'd have a vaginal birth until about seven months in when the doctor said she'd have to plan a C-Section because a vaginal birth for some reason wasn't safe.
