As a bachelor guy I do my own cooking and house cleaning. Been looking for a portable vacuum cleaner when I don't have time to lug the big one around. What do you think?

Small vacuum cleaners are ok for special tasks but if you only owned one let it be a good quality upright carpet vacuum with a large capacity disposable bag.

The reviews are very good on Amazon. 89 reviews with 4.5 stars. Can't go wrong there. If a air tight hepa filter is important to you. You can get a pretty good shop vac for around $30, of course they are not hepa and not that air tight. I like to use the hepa when I am scraping lead paint, to suck up all the dust. They work pretty good for jobs like that. I have a scraper in one hand and the vacuum in the other hand and I vacuum as I scrape.

Usually when I buy a vacuum I go to the repair people to ask their advice. They fix them all day long. So they know the ones that will hold up the best. I still have a vacuum I bought 15 years ago. We use it out in the garage in my workshop and it still works really good. Every now and then we got to clean the hose out or replace the belt. Otherwise it is good to go.

I'm pretty sure Consumer Reports is bought by companies for ratings much like Yelp or BBB. I use to be a member of their site till I realized their ratings didn't really match up with reality.

I now get a lot of my information from Reddit on the buyitforlife forum for products.

Why would someone get a portable vacuum cleaner when they can just get a Roomba?

I've been wanting a ROBOTIC vacuum cleaner. I think they are called Roomba. You won't believe how tickled I am at one of these.

It's robotic, so it functions all by itself. I don't have to do any cleaning myself, so why in the world get a portable!?

Roombas are the flat, circular disk-looking robots. Didn't you see those?

You should not get a hoover. From my personal experience it broke way too easily. The vacuum we now have, it's not a hoover, thank God.

...every single hoover we used broke.

You should choose any brand except that one.
