Who owns the internet?
What piece of it? The websites? The addresses? The infrastructure? The DNS routing? The internet is not really a cohesive whole. It is a huge conglomeration of things owned by many different entities.

They are not making a determination of what is allowed. They are labeling things as disinformation that are not true. ( I believe. I've not really read the article)
Cmon mate, its a short read.

Do you know about ICANN?

I just read it. It seems like its meant to identify AI generated disinfo like deepfakes and "viral narratives".

I think theyre trying to get ahead of the absolute blizzard of disinfo we'll be swimming in once AI does the faking rather than 50 guys in a Moscow suburb.

I appreciate the peril of such a program even existing. But honestly it seems preferable to the ocean of malevolent ignorance that will engulf us. Especially after seeing Americans lack of discernment recently.

As a fan of death metal I’m straining to think of a song with sex as the topic from the bands I listen to.
Yeah death metal is more "high minded" than that. At least from my beginners perspective.

Any recommendations for the adventurous death metal newbie?

I am aware of it but not really something I deal with.
First let me just preface this by saying I know next to nothing about computers except for how to use it on a pretty basic level. This in response to someone "owning" the internet.

ICANN- One World, One Internet (from their website)

From this article...

"Currently, the U.S. government retains limited authority over the Internet’s domain name system, primarily through the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) functions contract between the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) and the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). By virtue of the IANA functions contract, the NTIA exerts a legacy authority and stewardship over ICANN, and arguably has more influence over ICANN and the domain name system (DNS) than other national governments. Currently the IANA functions contract with NTIA expires on September 30, 2016. However, NTIA has the flexibility to extend the contract for any period through September 2019. On March 14, 2014, NTIA announced the intention to transition its stewardship role and procedural authority over key Internet domain name functions to the global Internet multistakeholder community. To accomplish this transition, NTIA asked ICANN to convene interested global Internet stakeholders to develop a transition proposal. NTIA stated that it would not accept any transition proposal that would replace the NTIA role with a government-led or an intergovernmental organization solution."

"Since NTIA’s announcement of its intention to relinquish its authority over IANA, concerns have risen in Congress over the proposed transition. Critics worry that relinquishing U.S. authority over Internet domain names may offer opportunities for either hostile foreign governments or intergovernmental organizations, such as the United Nations, to gain undue influence over the Internet. On the other hand, supporters argue that this transition completes the necessary evolution of Internet domain name governance toward the private sector, and will ultimately support and strengthen the multistakeholder model of Internet governance."

Seems suspicious to me.

Why would we do such a thing?
Why would we allow control on internet naming to be controlled on a world wide scale? Because it is a world wide service and it is only getting larger by the day.

Yeah its an engineered system. If everyone is free to name their website whatever they please, then what happens when 50 users pick the same name for their site? Or if people dont know what names the system can and cant read? Someone has to maintain protocols for the whole thing or it doesnt work at all.

I'm a bit bothered by the tendency to view every centralized organization as quasi diabolical. Some systems are simply collective by their nature and we need to maintain them collectively - with all the vigilance against abuse that we can bring.

I think most non technical people have no understanding of the complexities of the internet and how reliant it is upon standardization and cooperation.

Arch Enemy is a good band to start with in my opinion. Good melody and accessible (read intelligible) vocals. The Anthems of rebellion and Doomsday Machine albums are the best work of their former vocalist with their current one taking over from War Eternal onwards. In a similar vein, but totally different lyrical content, Amon Aramth from their album Fate of Norns onwards. If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous Lorna Shore , Carnifex or the earlier album of Make them Suffer.

And yay, the holy TCP/IP address was assigned from on high via the DHCP server of righteousness.

DHCP is blasphemy! Only TCP/IP addresses in the authorized routing table (1994) should be use. :)
