It's almost dawn as I write this. DH, DD (2 yrs old) and I have just returned home from the Emergency Dept of the hospital. DD has been ill for the last 36 hrs with fevers and vomiting. She was diagnosed with an ear infection and given antibiotics. Her ear has since calmed down.

However, tonight, DD threw up three times at home in an hour, and four or five more times at the hospital. She has viral tonsilitis and gastroenteritis, neither of which can be helped with anything. (The antibiotics have been stopped under dr's orders.)

DD's on a rehydration plan here at home for the next 12 hours, but keeps throwing up everything we or the doctors give her. She's not to eat for the next 12 hours, besides gastrolyte iceblocks the doc gave her to keep her sugar leves up. If she's throwing up in another 6-8 hours, we have to take her back to the hospital to have her put on an IV drip. She's already thrown up since we've been home.

I'm getting sick too, slightly feverish and nauseous. Tonight, my nausea has gotten worse, and I have awful stomach cramps. I've consumed some diluted juice and four small crackers. Big mistake. I already feel so weak.

DH is doing okay so far, but he has been away for the last 24 hours.

Please pray for us all, and speedy recoveries. We sure need them. We're supposed to be packing up our house so we can relocate in six days' time.

Dear Lord, please help us and give us strength. Amen.

Edited to add:

I'm really, seriously questioning whether TTC is the right thing for us right now. If we struggle this much with one child and all our respective health concerns, how are we going to make it with two or more children??

:prayer: Dear Lord I pray for this family, I pray for your healing, and your blessing. I pray you will give them strength, and confidence in knowing your will and the paths they should take. I pray your angels will suround them with peace & love, and that satan will be held at bay. In Jesus Name Amen!!

Well Jemma what your dd had must be really contagious, because it was able to travel online. My dd started having diarehea last nitgh and started throwing up this morning. I don't think it near as bad as your daughters, BTW I am still sending prayer your way. But I feel so bad for her. She has only been potty trained a few months and the diarehea aspect is really upsetting her. Keep us up to date ok!!!

Just a bit of advice from a mommy of 3. Keep her away from all milk for 2-3 days! I'm not sure the age of your daughter, but if she is not on formula wait 2-3 days. Milk is horrible on an upset tummy, keep her on only pedialyte for a few days. And if she's still on formula - go 1 complete day without any milk/formula, then give 3/4 pedialyte 1/4 milk/formula for the next day, then 1/2 and 1/2, then full strength the next day.

Oh, and one last thing. I'm pretty sure your doc gave you the instructions for the B.R.A.T. diet, but I'll just remind you. ;) Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast. :D

I just want to second what 3Princessmom said and add on aswell - if she seems to be having trouble keeping it down avoid it!!

When my son was 2 he got a bad dose of gastro bug... after a period of vomiting the good bacteria in the gut that breaks down lactose is missing and it takes a while to build it back up

My little boy was lactose intolerant following his bout of gastro thingie bug for 6months!! I had to change him to a lactose free form of milk otherwise he would have horried nappies and stomach cramps and bring the milk straight back up

Sorry it's taken me a while to get to these. Was moving house and had no internet access. Am back online now!

The doc over here didn't mention the BRAT diet, actually. That must be an American thing - applesauce isn't huge over here like it is over there. :)

Anyway, thanks for your advice. As it turned out, we were told to keep DD off milk for at least 24 hours. We learned the hard way to keep her on minimum milk for 2-3 days. We tried giving her a bottle of milk after the 24 hours, which she promptly threw back up again. It took us a few days of diluted milk (with water), but she gradually was able to take a full bottle again. She's fine now, thankfully. :amen:

DH and I have often wondered the same thing - whether DD is developing lactose-intolerance, whether permanent or temporary. We have spoken to two doctors about it and they both say that she likely isn't lactose-intolerant. However, for my part, I'm not satisfied that the issue was properly examined. I don't think DH is either. We'll keep an eye on her and see if DD continues to have issues after milk bottles.

I am getting to this a little late, now I am seeing that there is more then one sick little one. Im praying for everyeone to be well!! :prayer:

Don't let an illness decide whether or not you want more children. I will be honest and say that when you have one or more and they are sick, its difficult, but you forget that when you see their little faces smiling up at you!! After all those little faces are special gifts from God!

Thankfully we haven't let an illness decide whether we want more children, because I'm currently four weeks pregnant. :)

I discovered this a couple of weeks ago with a super-sensitive test (many of them, actually :D ), and the ladies here said they didn't mind if I stayed with this forum and offered my support for others TTC. I kind of feel like an imposter now, but I feel a little connection with the girls here.

Thats strange?? It was the first thing that my Dr said to me when I took my son back and said "gastro" followed shortly after by "stinky nappy" LOL

There is a definant medical link between tummy bugs and a lactose intolerance that can follow

check out this website as one of many (I just went to google and typed in gastro and lactose intolerance)

http://www.virtualchildshealth.com/diseases.asp?

specifically:
Secondary causes of lactose intolerance include:
  • Bacterial overgrowth, which is associated with increased fermentation of lactose in the small bowel.
  • Gastrointestinal infections.
  • Injury to the lining of the gastrointestinal tract, including coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease (in particular Crohn's disease) and drug or radiation induced enteritis.
and then:

In some secondary causes of lactose intolerance, lactase levels fall transiently. For example, many people find that they become relatively lactose intolerant after gastroenteritis, or a viral tummy infection. This is due to damage to the cells that produce lactase, and once these cells recover and begin to produce lactase again, symptoms of lactose intolerance disappear.

All I can advise is that you are Mum and you KNOW your child better than the Dr, if this is not like her follow it up and trust your instinct :)

Edited: I just wanted to add an additional website that I thought was really helpful as far as HOW to deal with the lactose intolerance - tips etc....

Thanks for the links. Will check them out asap. That's what I think too - that our parenting instincts should override a doctor's inconclusive opinions.
