Okay, from what I read, I feel as some people see this rep. system as a...popularity thing. Like for instance, if you have a lot of points, you're obviously some wise creature.

So my question is...Is that why people are upset? Are you (no one in particular) upset that some have 3000 because of a drive-by, while you have 400 from being "wise"? hmmm...Just wondering. I think each of us are arguing from a different viewpoint. Some see the rep. system as fun (and as something to encourage others), while others see it as something serious.

Because you can't argue when you can't see the other side....

As for me, I give them out as encouragement because I never go into the debate forums (meaning I wouldn't give them out for "wise" posts). The rep. system is for everyone. If someone feels down one day, or they're new...I'll give them points.

ps139, Emma's drive by is kinda like your Reilly's Pub in OBOB. I like posting in Emma's and talking to my friends. I don't just randomly give out rep points solely in there. If I see a good post anywhere on CF I'll hit you with some rep points.

I guess I don't see what the big deal is.

cant blessings be for the fun stuff?? i mean, they are the GREATEST when it comes to encouraging ppl when they are down... especially newbies... and theyre useful! whereas the reps are REPUTATION, which should indicate your reputation, not how often you've been encouraged....

I don't know where the blessings come from unless someone posts that they blessed me. When you increase someone's rep you get to send a little love note with it and not have everyone read it because it's not in a post.

my suggestions: make the little note in their guest book? tell them your are blessing them, or dont tell, what ever ya want... or PM them. that's easy to do.

people can read guestbooks entries as well. and clicking a thumbs up to write a note is much easier and quicker than clicking someone's name, selecting to send a pm and all that other junk you have to select or deselect to send a pm.

perhaps we can have the private note that way and not give points out. i really don't care. i just like being able to send someone a quick little note to let them know they are cared for. sending someone a 4 word PM seems kinda ridiculous

Im posting here exactly what I posted in the supporter forums:

I absolutely agree with dsdumpling here! I LOVE the rep threads (Ummm, btw, Emma's is NOT the only one).

I want to add something here...Erwin has stated in the FAQ that you 'can' give rep points out for threads you prefer or agree with, or think are well written...but that is not the only reason why you can give them out.
It was 'suggested' that this is what they 'could' be used for. It doesn't mean they have to be. My point...I rep all my Lutheran friends. They could post "hello" or they could post a 2000 word speech. Either way, I like them, I talk to them in PM's alot, and they are my friends. I rep them each day.

Many others do the same. But my point is: Don't just think that this ONE THREAD is the disease or cause of the "rep issue" you see. If Erwin decides this is wrong, and closes a friendship thread where friends rep, do you think you are going to stop "repping amongst friends" in all the forums?

I'm just trying to get you to see the bigger picture here. Its not one thread, as this post may make it seem. With that said, closing one thread (which I believe SHOULD NEVER happen) will not solve your problem...so how would the folks who don't like them propose Erwin and the Mods police everyone out there who rep their friends...just because the can...? Its impossible.

This seems like a whole lot about nothing, to me...by thats just my .02

EDIT: Oh, I would like to add...that I have repped you before Polycarp1...a few weeks back. I think I have done it twice to be exact, but I may be wrong. I didn't do it because you had some kind of great response to a thread. I did it because I had reps to burn, I like you, and your name was on the page as I started repping folks. My point is, not all your 444 rep points are because of the reason that is suggested in the faq Erwin wrote, so unfortunately we all have rep points from 'other than expected' reasons. Sometimes I give them out for fun, like a few from me that you have. Enjoy them, my friend!

for me, PMing is hard to do. I mean...not that it takes time. But many times, I have no idea what to say. And sometimes, it's possible for me to say the wrong thing, so it's best that I don't say anything at all. Or other times, the person doesn't want a PM. For instance, maybe they're just clearing their thoughts in their journal. So...I give them points just to know I'm there. Or that I'm listening (err...reading).

I don't see what's so wrong with give out points freely. Again, like I said before, everyone uses them for different reasons. And being that I don't debate (nor do I read anything from the debate forums)......does that mean that I can't use rep points? Sounds like that what people are implying. If I'm only "allowed" to give them out when posts are "good", then well...I guess I can't give them out at all.
I mean...the only forums I go into are ones that are "basic chat".

Blessings...I usually don't inform when I give them. Besides, me getting blessings from someone and me getting points brings different feelings. Points are more encouraging to me. And...me giving blessings and leaving a note in their guestbook that "Oh, I gave you blessings because...." seems very...I don't know. It doesn't look that special.

See? Here is what I mean by my post...

*kittie* had 497 rep points, and 4 gems to show for herself. I felt like pushing her over the 500 mark (which gives her another gem) just because I felt like it, and because it would allow her to rep other folks at a higher amount now. Now she has 514 and 5 gems.

She didn't post anything that wow'ed me...or blew my mind. I did it "just because". Because I had reps to give today, I like her, and simply because I could. Whats the harm if people like myself get together in one thread (there actually is more than one...look harder) and fellowship together with small talk and repping?

Again, Erwin gave a "suggestion" as to how to use reps. Noone ever said that was the ONLY reason or rule to give them out, as I have just showed by my example of repping *kittie* just now.

I'm even shocked we are having this discussion. Its just plain silly. They are reps..just enjoy them for whatever reason.

ok, how about this? change the rep system to "love gems" or something, and start a whole new system for genuine reps.... keep the two systems separate.

What do you propose to keep the new system pure and free from giving reputaion (or whatever you would call it) for reasons that don't meet your standards? The key to this whole debate is that we must be Bereans (Acts 17:11 These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so) and search the scriptures to see if the comments made in a post line up with them. You honestly think that someone with less reputation points (or more for that matter) has less insight into the scriptures and is less in tune with the Holy Spirit? We have to be careful about putting too much creedence into what a persons blessings, reputation or number of posts are and start judging the persons posts on the merit of it's content. I personally love using reputation points to tell a person "Jesus loves you!!!" or give them a word of encouragement when they need it. It takes a total of two seconds to send and you never have to leave the thread. PM's or Guests books are a pain when you are crunched for time. I work and have very little time to spend on the forum and would like to see the reputation points stay as they are. If anything, we need to add a warning to newcomers to not place too much stock in any numbers (Blessings, reps, or #of posts). The real judgement needs to be based on what the content of the post is.

This subject has been enlightening. I had no idea that reputation points could be shared easily through Emma's Drive By......(what was it again?). I have never been there. I merely assumed that if someone has a large amount of points that a lot of people agreed with their views. Interesting. I thought the blessing system was the only means for giving friendship approvals.

I guess I have put more weight on reputation points. Personally, it encourages me whenever I receive a point or two. I think that perhaps I have posted something that God would smile upon or something that He gave me the words for (or even a bit of relief that maybe I didn't totally make a moron of myself). I try hard never to just let words carelessly fly out of my mouth.

And I love to give reputation points to others. When someone has shown a Christ-like spirit in their post and has stood firmly for Biblical principles, I feel they deserve a small symbol of accolade. But I guess when all is said, it doesn't matter to me how the points are received.
