• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Okay so I have been taking seajoy's advice and trying to ignore the thoughts. The circular thoughts have stopped some.
However, I still get those panic moments. The panic moments of 'what if I get in a car crash and die and go to hell'
It's this horrible panic feeling and I don't like it.

The best is to do the therapy with a doctor, but I know your situation with your folks. Maybe see if you can find a book on the therapy. I can't think of any at the moment. I'm sure someone will come up with one for you.

Remember - therapy is very hard. You will stumble at times. Just start over and know that this will take a while.

I do have a book on obsessions. I haven't read it yet since it is secular, I don't know how much good it would do. Do you think it is worth a read?

Thank you for the continued support. I really appreciate it.
My opinion is that there is some info out there that is secular based but does contain truth about OCD. If it says something you feel is unscriptural, simply disregard it.

The following website by Dr. Phillipson is not Christian based though I think it has a lot of insight about OCD and is well worth reading. I can't speak for your particular book, in my opinion, without seeing it but don't reject real insight just cause it's not Christian based. ( I realize you were asking seajoy.)

Anyway, this is the website and particualarly the articles I think you should look at~

I looked at the book link. Who knows but to me it didn't really look like it would apply that much to OCD.

Silly me

I got that book forever ago and got confused about it. It says Addictive thinking on the front so I figured that it would be related to OCD haha.

I would not be concerned at using a sacular book to get information on therapy for ocd. As kaykay said, ignore anything that goes against Christianity - but really - I doubt if you will find anything like that. Many times we have doctors who are not Christians for various illnesses. We don't ask them if they are Christian before they treat us.

I have begun writing a book about my ocd, from a Christian perspective. But it's taking me forever to write it. I'm only about to start chapter 5. I do have an editor interested - but as pokey as I am at writing, I hope she doesn't forget me.

Okay, even though it isn't technically about OCD, I'll give it a read and see how that goes.

That's neat that you are writing a book about it. I will definitely want to read that when it is published.

Oops - I meant secular books on OCD. I don't think a book on other stuff would be that much of a help to you.

Remember that the same techniques work for both normal and religious obsessions. A book doesn't have to be explicitly religious to deal with OCD, since mental disorders are not a spiritual problem, but a biochemical one!

Excellent post, Z! Our compulsion to try and counter the bad thoughts, is our handwashing, so to speak. We can never be assured that the 'germs' are all gone, so it all keeps going in a circle. Great points!
