The name is a combination of two visions of himself. The first is that of a black sheep, which we all understand conceptually. The other is that of a sheepdog, and that comes from an essay by Lt Col Dave Grossman:

On Sheep, Wolves and Sheepdogs

My wish is that he would have stayed and fought it out... but i'm trying to avoid arm chair quarterbacking in general... I pray that he keeps fighting, and never gives up using his weapon of choice: the Holy Rosary. It's also interesting to hear Lt Col Grossman's further comments about the Sheepdog...

Some of the comments on the Shea article were quite insightful. One in particularly from a Deacon.
Are you talking about this comment from Dcn. Kandra?

Is the Black Sheepdog asking the Black Sheep to follow him? I get that impression.

I'm not going to judge him... but I find this sad and unfortunate. I was hoping it would turn out more like how it turned out with St Padre Pio or (I think) St John Bosco, who were temporarily suspended or accused of things also. (they both submitted to the Church).

I am disappointed. He who taught to never give up, to pray, pray the Rosary, to stand up and be counted etc. has folded like a deck of cards. I don't know what has went on behind those closed doors. But I do know a fold when I see/read one. Prayers for John Corapi, the black sheep dog - may God be with him.

I'm disappointed too. What happened to 'fighting the good fight' like it says in 2 Timothy 4:7-8?
But ultimately, the decision is (ex) Father Corapi's. If he chooses to walk away, that's up to him. All we can do is pray for him.

In my opinion, the video of his announcement is kinda scary looking to me. It looks like a wolf's eyes. And one of the eyes has wolves in them, the other has lambs in them. Maybe I'm missing something, but it's more scary than reassuring to me. Was that video created by his new organization?

given the scrutiny and risk evaluations given to people seeking a vocation to the priesthood now (thanks to bishops covering up pedophile abuse)

they never would have touched corapi with a ten foot pole if he sought a vocation today and what happened here illustrates why

he will leave the clergy more than a couple million dollars richer than when he went in- and we are left with scandal once again

sounds to me like corapi won

I never had a high opinion of him, he struck me as a fraud from day 1. The first time I heard him preach I thought "Dude, why the funny voice? Talk normal, if what you're saying has merit, it will come through." Popes JP2 and Benedict16 have weak voices, gentle and full of humility - but they command my attention better than Corapi ever did.

i dont care for corapi- but there i some things that i did admire about him and his ministry

but i could listen to him for maybe 3 1/2 minutes before feeling very agitated and wondering why admin did not realize they were losing listeners and sponsorships

I liked him and agreed with what he had to say, but I always worry when people get a following... I have hardly ever seen it end well... We are all so prone to pride that it must be hell to fight against, let alone the number of enemies one who preaches the truth builds up against him. May God guide him.

Yes, I get the idea of "sheep dog" guarding the sheep. But, does the dog image have to look so foreboding and scary? It comes across as angry to me, not reassuring in God's love.

I honestly thought that was his real speaking voice. Didn't he serve the military or something?

Anyway he reminded me of Captain Jean Luc Picard with that head and that voice.

I've always been a fan of Fr. Corapi. His teaching on the rosary opened me up to the Catholic view of the prayer and helped me see past my bias & misunderstanding. His lectures on the catechism are fantastic as well as many, many other subjects. He's really a dynamic speaker as well.

All that said, I'm disappointed he's stepping away from the priesthood and this black sheep dog bit just comes off as weird. I would prefer that he stayed in the priesthood and fought the good fight.
