And it is more than a little nauseating to see the absolute glee with which some pounce on every transgression of Christian morality if the trangressor is not a liberal.
i think this glee would be more apparent if it were happening someplace other than your own mind.

though the greater the hypocrisy, the greater the fall.

This sad story, since Ted Haggard now admits he is a liar and a deciever,is just another example of why we cannot put our faith in man, because they will always fail you. This will definately hurt the church, and hardened the lost's hearts even more against Christians, all we can do is pray God's will be done, and for God to help each of us to show Christ by example of our lives.

If this hurts the church, then we have a messed up view of what the church should be in my opinion. My bible doesn't say anything about man being perfect, or that upon a profession of faith I am suddenly without sin. It does talk a lot about me being a sinner.

When did the church become all about judgement and condemnation? That certainly wasn't what Jesus was all about - the last time I checked, Jesus spent a whole lot more time healing people, than he did judging or condemning them.

I can understand and appreciate that 'leaders' are held to a higher standard than us 'regular' Christians are, but we all screw up and make mistakes. As Christians, I think that through our reactions to this situation we have the ability to have it hurt or help the church. If we continue to condemn this man, then you are right, it will hurt the church because we will simply be showing ourselves to be no different than the world, but if we react with grace, mercy, and love, acknowledging that he did wrong, but also realizing that we are all sinners, and all do wrong on a daily basis, then maybe this insance can show that we are different then the world is - and different in a more loving way.

More to the point, while he was indeed, innocent until proven guilty he admitted his guilt. The mere failing of a lie detector test proves nothing, guilty folk pass them and innocent folk fail them on a regular basis. Which is why they are not usable as evidence in courts any more.

After reading much of this thread I really need to say, watch what you speak. The very words that are spoken/typed come from YOUR heart and may condem you. If any of us have not sin in secret then we can boast but all of us have sinned some may not have had sinned revealed yet but am I to say that God is using this sitiuation to cleanse this man? We are not to judge any man lest we judge. Let God do with him as God sees fit. But as for our heart and voice it is better that we speak not against him as a person.
