  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The thread begun by OracleX's excellent post was closed long before I wandered in here, but I wanted to say something about it anyway: :amen:

I also want to add that while we may have disagreements reguarding some doctrines and different traditions, as Christians no matter how far apart our differences we have far more in common. Namely we all are washed in the blood of the Lamb and call Him Lord of our lives.

As christians we sometimes forget when we speak, we are speaking to a bro/sister in Christ and should be more careful on what/how we say things.

I totally agree with you guys, but sometimes it's difficult. Actually, there's one issue that's been troubling me for awhile, so maybe this is a good place to ask for advice.

Over in the Non-Christian religions forum, there are a bunch of Hindus posting propaganda which leads people to believe that Hinduism is the original religion of the entire world, and that the Gospel of Jesus was copied from Krishna mythology. Many of the Christians who respond don't bother to refute these claims, but instead say things like "wow, that's interesting!" I can't help but think that by accepting these claims, these people are trampling on the blood of all the saints who died to defend Christian orthodoxy. So I've opposed these people, and have been accused of questioning the faith of others.

What do you guys think I should do? Should I try to debate fellow Christians who are so eager to hand their souls over to other gods? Or should I let them believe what they want? On one hand, I feel that it's wrong to accept the existence of other gods. But as has been already said, unity in the body of Christ is important. What do you think?

I want to be humble with advice, being so new, but bigmouth that I am, I can't help myself.

I believe it is fine to disagree with another brother or sister. Just as we disagree with our earthly brothers and sisters. If you are like me, the biggest fights you ever got into were with your siblings. But the key is your heart. If you approach a disagreement with love in your heart that will shine through. That is a lot easier with one's flesh and blood sibling, but no less important with our brothers and sisters in Christ. I just this morning reread II Timothy 2:23-26 (maybe so I could share it with you :) )

[BIBLE]"Don't have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels. And the Lord's servant must not quarrel; instead, he must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. Those who oppose him he must gently instruct, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will."[/BIBLE]

My nature is to debate and argue. I must constantly remind myself of this verse as well as John 13:24

[BIBLE]
"A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."
[/BIBLE] (Emphasis added)

So yes, I would engage anyone in debate, but a loving debate, teaching with tenderness.

I agree with easttndoc what we post should be Christ like and nice. You can show someone the truth nicely even when you counter their post/opinions/beliefs. There's many members who don't know how to do this and it gets them into trouble plus gives them a bad testimony.
Sometimes people don't always "think" before they post and let their "emotions" take over. We all have different beliefs in certain areas even here in the Baptist/AnaBaptist forum. We can still disagree nicely without name calling/belitting the person or any other rule violations.

What you brought up about members saying things like "wow, that's interesting" IMO don't know enough to even discuss/debate a person and that is their only response. Some also take what another person says as gospel cause their answer looks educated when it is not truthful just worded to look that way.

As christians we are to show false teachings for what they are but we just have to be careful in how we say it.
