  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The pilot who shot down the plane? What are you talking about?

------------------
In any case the documentary shown shortly after 9/11 was enough for me..I won't buy a movie ticket, a book, a stupid memorial statue... I can't stand the endless 9/11 money grab, everyone wants a piece of 9/11..

I have my doubts about wanting to see this. I may but for tonight I'd say my girlfriend and I wouldn't get anything but sorrow out of it again. It just seems endless. It happened,it's over.
Well, fwiw, I've heard from some fairly reliable sources that part of the proceeds from this movie are going to the families of those killed on the flight. I also heard that family members had been consulted during, or prior to, the making of the movie, though I haven't yet found out exactly for what they were consulted.

Just my thoughts,

I think its more of a heroism film rather than a disconsolate one. They're portraying the bravery of those regular U.S citizens that were on the flight and the sacrifice they made for America. Sure, its a sad story, but above all and an inspiring one.

I refuse to watch it, even if the proceeds go to the families. I think it is done in bad taste, and there are other ways to raise money other than recreating a horrible event on film. But I guess that what we Americans do best.

Greetings,

While I have not yet found anything that I would consider solidly conclusive, I have found a few articles by reputable journalists that consistantly report the families had been consulted, both for approval and guidance on how family members should be portrayed, and that 10% of the first three days ticket sales have been promised to go to the United 93 Memorial Fund.

Here is one of those articles: NY Theater pulls trailer for United 93

As for the movie itself, I can understand the trepidation and/or animosity that many people feel. I, for one, abhor sensationalism in any form. Nonetheless, if this movie is going to put forth as honest and objective an account as possible of what happened on that plane that day, then I support it. One, because it honors a group of people who, though not specifically heroic in the way they typically lived their lives, freely chose to take heroic actions. Two, because it makes a statement to the world, especially to the terrorists and would-be terrorists, that even in the face of extraordinary circumstances, so-called ordinary Americans are not so 'ordinary' after all.

Just my thoughts,

What the heck? You haven't even seen the movie yet and already your discarding it? I fail to see how it's done in bad taste.

If I say December 7, do most people get emotional and choked up or even know what I am talking about? We will eventually get over 9/11 just like the country got over Pearl Harbor. 2,280 soldiers and 68 civilians were killed there.

I have mixed feelings about this movie, I'll probably see it though because it's piqued(sp?) my interest. Although reactions here where I live will be stronger I'm sure than other parts of the US, I live in NY.

I have no desire to put myself through the horror of that day again. I have heard that it is well made, but the review I read said that they depict the terrorists cutting a flight attendant's throat in graphic fashion. The guy who reviewed the movie is known to be a horror buff and he said it was the most horrifying scene he's ever seen in any movie. Why do I need to put an image like that in my mind?

I don't know, something about the idea of a movie based on the events of 9/11 leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I can't put my figure on it, but it just doesn't seem like it'll ever be the right time or it just isn't appropiate or what, but I don't like the idea of it. Maybe it's because I think that a movie cliche in a movie with such a powerful backdrop would make it inappropiate, or that there is no need to really bring up old wounds in this manner.

I'm not saying we should forget about 9/11, but we shouldn't make a movie about it.

I agree with you. I can't put my finger on exactly why I think it shouldn't have been made....but it's just a feeling within me. It just feels wrong.
