  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Unique terms..

Has anyone here come up with unique terms to describe their religion/spirituality?

Are there any terms that hold a special place in your heart? Terms you like to use a lot?

It would be cool if this sub-forum had a stickied thread dedicated to various spiritual/religious definitions. They could help people better understand each other and not talk past one another. I know similar forums have them.

Unique terms? No, I tend to reuse words that are already in use, although I might define them a bit differently than some.

By "spirituality", I mean an interest in improving and maintaining one's vantagepoint on the deep issues of life for the purpose of personal growth and/or transcendence.

I often use the term daimon (Greek for spirit) or genius (Roman for spirit) to refer to either one's ideal self or a calling towards one's ideal self. This is not my pure invention, but is inspired by David Norton and Pierre Hadot's discussions of classical ideas about personal destiny and potential.

There are quite a few supplications used by Muslims. Many have become common place My Personal Favorites

Ma Shaa Allah--While the translation is "The will of God was done" The meaning is more along being "Thank God. for his Mercy" It is a statement of appreciation

In sha Allah--"If God wills'' it corresponds to the English "God willing"

Bismillah ir Rahman ir Raheem---"In the name of God, the provider of all, the most mercifull"

Subhan Allah--"Glorious is God"

Al-ḥamdu lillāh--"All Praise and thanks be to God"

From what i understand christianforums.com is the largest internet christian community, not to mention us they can outreach too here. What kind of other cool places like this are there out there? Would like some link and/or private messages even from others here about places i could join as zstar and elaborate on the connection of zoroastrianism to jesus not sure where to begin. The unique term i come up with years back venturing away from christianity proper so to speak but identifying soley with the gospels and zoroastrianism as a compass was zoroastrichristanism.

I suppose I could create a unique term to describe my spirituality.
The advantage would be that I could avoid the potential misunderstandings connected to using terms that only fit almost-but-not-quite.

However, it'd pretty much defeat the purpose, as I'd have to explain my point of view to anyone unfamiliar with the term - which, given that it was my original creation, would be basically everyone.

So, back to square one.

Been there done that and found out the same thing!

My current label "mystic" is wide enough to not actually say very much about my religiousness, but at least some people have heard about it before and have some associations, some are correct and some aren't, but that's a start.

Out of curiousity, if you made up unique term for your spirituality, what it would be? I'm a great fan of new descriptive terms related to everything and I'm always in search for more of them. I've made up quite few of them myself, but they don't translate to english that well so I can't really share my pet-terms here.

Well, let's see...

First, let's try to define my spirituality in terms that are already known...

I'm a monistic, panpsychic, non-theistic (yet panentheistic) mystic influenced by the works of C.G. Jung and Joseph Campbell. I do not believe in any personal gods who interfere with daily life by supernatural means, yet I *do* believe in an underlying cosmic principle that transcends our limited understanding, and that can be represented by (or manifested in) archetypal images that touch upon the common symbolism of the human condition.
I believe that our biggest challenge (both as individuals and as a species) lies in dispelling the illusion of separation that underlies ALL western ideologies since late antiquity, viewing Man as a species that exists above and beyond Nature rather than a species existing within (and depending on) a vast interdependent ecosystem.

My inspiration stems from zen meditation, shamanic practices, Christian mysticism, daoist philosophy, secular science, poetry, posthumanism, personal reflection, the Western esoteric tradition, post-structuralism, and a psychological reading of different mythologies - just to mention a few influences.

I believe that even though shallow eclecticism is detrimental and more of a sign of cultural imperialism and appropriation, a fruitful exchange of ideas is vital to preventing a world view from becoming narrow-minded and incestuous.
The internet provides us with access to a wealth of information that would have been hard to come by even twenty years ago, and connects cultures from all across the globe. As a reaction to that, xenophobia and right-wing ideologies experience an unprecedented degree of popularity as people try to re-create the tightly knit, homogeneous communities mankind has been used to for millennia. But the future lies in another direction.

So - what shall we name this unique animal?

Ok, there are quite many sources of inspiration to fit them all into one term.

What about: Naturalist-mystical, unity-seeking green cultural eclectism?

That's not really a new term tho, rather like collection of allready existing words.

And here I thought I was being fancy by calling my spirituality eudaimonic. :)

I can empathize with your frustrations.

I try to counter this by brainstorming terms I think will be intuitive to the average person. Or at least achieve this to the highest degree possible. The plus side is that at least among a close circle of friends and acquaintances the term will be stored in their memory. You can always hope that the term will catch on and spread. When writing stories and doing art, I always keep this in mind.

These aren't unique terms at all, but Love, Harmony and Beauty are terms we often use to help remind us of our spiritual path.

There are other cool places. While I like CF, the limits to discussion can be tiresome.

There are a few Christian/pagan/etc forums I visit, but they're 18+ so I probably can't link them here, lol.

Thanks! I can hardly keep up with my topics here so maybe not the best idea reconsidering - i've had whole topics completely deleted elswhere since my reasearch does not line up with their take on things so i am thankful for a place like christianforums.com with a place in their outreach for others who believe differantly.
