Hi! This is marvelously relevant to any discussion that might crop up on the topic of Spirituality. It's all SO personal, that it's a real issue.
For example, something as simple as the word "faith," can mean a wide variety of different things to different people. That can devolve into a shouting match with all parties digging in their heels over what it means, which is as you say, folks merely talking past one another and no real communication taking place. That makes for terribly drab conversation, so I'm glad to see you'd rather avoid that.
I can't even say that all Christians use the word faith to mean the same thing. The phrase "keep the faith," literally meant to keep the rules. So right there, we see that at least in a Christian context it can't possibly mean what we see its normal usage as being today.
So we're left with a choice. We can either respect others, hear what they say, and respond to them on their own terms, or ... all the other options are far less ideal, with the recent events in France being a valid illustration of that taken to the extreme. While we might all have a different Spirituality, this type of choice is something we all have in common.
