Often I have heard many people ask about this subject of the creature/creation. After carefully Bible study and cross reference and research in commentaries, the answer is more clearly to be found right there in the pages of the Bible.

The creature is mentioned in several places in both the Old Testament and New Testament. It often it describes the living animals of creation and is prominently used in the Genesis creation account.

However, there is a specific reason for why the translators used the word 'creature' in Romans 8:19-21; and 'creation' in Romans 8:22. The context of Romans 8:19-23, overall, pertains to the manifestation of the sons of God the Father (Romans 8:14-15). In these verses, we have been informed that as an heir of God your Father and joint-heir of Christ (Romans 8:17), we are going to be in - and part of - that creature, as members of the new creature in Christ. We will have a part in liberating that creature from the bondage of corruption when that heavenly host creature sees the manifestation of the sons of God (Romans 8:19)!!! We are those sons of God!

As sons of God (Romans 8:14-15), we receive the instruction of what is honest and true in view of the knowledge of the fundamental manifestation and fundamental impact God expects us to make as His sons upon the creature (Romans 8:19).

And it involves receiving instructions in regard to the fundamental outlook and prospect we are to have and operate upon as God’s sons in this dispensation of His grace, even before we are manifested to the creature, which is currently in the bondage of corruption; part in parcel resulting from the overall curse of sin on the heavens and earth, chiefly, Genesis 3.

This creature is represented here by the host of heaven, angels, in particular, but also sun, moon, stars. And that creature also includes us, for when this manifestation of the sons of God is revealed to that creature currently in the bondage of corruption, we shall then be part of that heavenly host as manifested as sons of God in those heavenly places - the creature! Reference made to the word 'creation' in Romans 8:19-23, in contrast, pertains in a more general way to describe the entire creation - both heaven and earth, as a whole. But not specifically like what the creature is referring to, for it is logically that the whole creation - heaven and earth - together are not manifested to the creature in Romans 8:19. The whole creation cannot be manifested to itself in Romans 8:19. So then God's Word is logical also, for it distinguishes between the sons of God and the creature - the host of heaven, etc.

To show a little bit of scripture support for this we turn to that key verse in Ephesians 1:10, where we are told that God will "gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him:". This scripture clearly points out that we who are In Christ are in there future, set in the heavenlies, not earth, so to say. We have our joint-heirship in Christ in heaven, not earth, so to speak. Ephesians 1:13 declares that all our spiritual blessings are in the heavenly places in Christ. It does not say that our spiritual blessings are in the earth. [There is a general blessing that all on the earth receive: air, natural resources, food, etc., but Ephesians 1:13 is not specifically talking about general earthly blessings.] While in contrast, the word translated 'creation', pertains to a more general way to describe the entire creation, however, it should not be lost that that particular word 'creature' is specifically referring to the host of heaven, and this includes us believers.

Romans 8:19: For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.
Romans 8:20: For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope,
Romans 8:21: Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.
Romans 8:22: For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.
Romans 8:23: And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.

A unique and important parallel cross reference Scripture regarding the creature is found in Deuteronomy 4:16-19. Particularly Deut. 4:19, when Moses describes the creature when warning the people what they would see if they lift up their eyes to heaven:

Deuteronomy 4:19: And lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun, and the moon, and the stars, even all the host of heaven, shouldest be driven to worship them, and serve them…

Moses warned the people not to corrupt themselves. However, important to our discussion, Moses distinguishes between the creatures as the beasts and fowl of the earth, and separates that distinction between those beasts of the earth and that creature which is the host of heaven above: angels, sun, moon, stars.

Deuteronomy 4:16: Lest ye corrupt yourselves, and make you a graven image, the similitude of any figure, the likeness of male or female,
Deuteronomy 4:17: The likeness of any beast that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged fowl that flieth in the air,
Deuteronomy 4:18: The likeness of any thing that creepeth on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the waters beneath the earth:
Deuteronomy 4:19: And lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun, and the moon, and the stars, even all the host of heaven, shouldest be driven to worship them, and serve them, which the LORD thy God hath divided unto all nations under the whole heaven.

When we return back to 'creature' in Romans 8:19-21; it is that host of heaven, which Moses also describes, as that which consists of the creature in Romans 8. Since today both Jew and Gentile can be saved by faith in the risen Lord Jesus Christ, the reference to us in Romans 8:23 and 8:19 is us being manifested to that heavenly host creature; which we will be made a permanent fixture into it via being In Him - Christ.

Actually, you took the long way around but you seem to have a good handle on two key concepts. God as Creator and a profoundly Pauline expression, 'in Christ'. If you wanted to do a little cross referencing check out Ephesians and try counting how many times Paul uses the expression 'in Christ' or it's equivalent. Then ask yourself a question, why did Paul stop using the expression starting in chapter 4?

Nice exposition, a little wordy but I enjoyed it, keep studying.

Grace and peace,
Mark
