Here's a few great instrumental and ambient bands that aren't very mainstream:
-Mogwai
-Explosions in the Sky
-Unwed Sailor
-Hammock
-Stars of the Lid
-Saxon Shore

and I'd say I personally like how a lot of the bands I listen to aren't that vastly well-known, it makes the music feel a little more personal to me. I've just always thought that once a band becomes that popular it feels like the music gets perverted to an extent, and over-abused.

Love those bands :) Totally agree with you on bands that get popular.
If you like those try Sufjan stevens.

How about Awaken? There are other keyboards too, but that's the first track that comes to mind when I think of Yes and piano. Still... you're right. Organ and analog synths mostly.

Yeah, Awaken would be one. I'm not that familiar with Going for the One, which is why it didn't come to mind.

Still doesn't change my point (which you agreed with) that band with "a lot of piano" is an odd description for Yes, and certainly not the first one that comes to mind for most people.

I think of them as a 70s band too... I wasn't a big fan of their 80s sound, and anything since then has been shaky at best. They know where their bread is buttered too, since they play almost exclusively 70s stuff in concert.

True. It's just that the term band from the 70s implies (to me at least) that they haven't done much, if anything, after the 70s. That's not the case with Yes, and more people probably know them for Owner of a Lonely Heart rather than anything released prior to that.

True... and more people know Genesis from Invisible Touch or Land of Confusion. Yet Genesis and Yes put out a staggering 18 studio albums between 1970 and 1980.

I've got a bunch:

Brand New

Rosetta

Colour Revolt

Slint

A Burning Water

Jakob

Mouth of the Architect

The Ascent of Everest

Junius

Pianos Become the Teeth

Ten Kens

Red Clay River

Bark Psychosis

There's just a few... If you've got the time, I suggest you check them out, they're all fantastic, and way under-rated. Especially Slint, Brand New, and Rosetta.

Awesome! Have you seen any of the artists you mentioned live? I've seen Sufjan Stevens play a couple times, but that was years ago. I really want to see M83 live, but I'm not sure when Anthony is going to start touring again... He's just been doing a film score and remixes lately.

I forgot to mention Team Ghost in my earlier artist list... It's a band started by Nicolas Fromageau (ex-M83) so they sound very similar to M83.

I've actually seen Danielson at a couple fests... One time they played as Danielson Famile, wearing their nurse outfits, and the other time was just Daniel Smith (Bro. Danielson) in his awesome ginormous tree costume! I'm pretty sure Sufjan Stevens was at at least one of those fests, but I can't remember if he played with them on-stage... Anway, it was quite an experience! I hope more artists drop by your area on their tours! :D

Definitely check out Team Ghost, and let me know if you want any more music recommendations... Feel free to recommend more artists to me also, you have great taste in music!

Ah!! that's awesome :D I'm so jealous. They seem like they would be really weird, but cool live lol. I shall check Team Ghost very soon. Feel free to recommend any more music. ^^

It's all good, at least you can watch bands live on YouTube! I can't imagine what life was like before the Internet! :D

I had to download Team Ghost's EP from iTunes... I couldn't find a torrent for it anywhere. I'm surprised more of M83's fanbase didn't carry over to TG.

File away Breathe Carolina and The Postal Service for artists to listen to if you haven't heard them... They both have the electronica/indie sound.

We went to a record show and paid $20 for a fuzzy bootleg VHS tape shot from the audience. I still can't get myself to part with my many beloved concert boots (even though I haven't had a VCR in my home theater for years).

Nice! I guess it feels more like you're at the show when watching a bootleg video as opposed to some YouTube videos, especially the ones shot on cell phones... Of course, these days it's better to not hear some bands live anyway, it sounds like they never rehearsed :D

There are some vhs to dvd converters out there... I don't know of any specific brands that are good, but it would be something worth researching so you can watch your bootlegs again.
