Any bands you just wonder like why they aren't more popular, or you say the name of them and people are just like "what is that?". Well most of my music is like that. :3 Here are some what I think are underrated bands

Belle and Sebastian
Sufjan stevens
Beirut
Stars
King Charles
The magnetic fields
Arcade fire

and if I listed all of them I'm sure people would get bored so there are some!
Now what are yours?

Alternative rock band Abandoned Pools. Their second album Armed To The Teeth is simply out standing, and (what seems like) only a handful of people know of them.
Although they might if they remember Clone High. I knew of them before that, though, due to "Mercy Kiss" and "The Remedy".

For me,
The Last Dance
Infidel inc.
Autumn's Descent
Flickerstick (the Abandoned Pools comment sparked this one, since they came out around the same; "Beautiful" and "When The Drugs Wear Off" for the win)
Cherry Monroe

and well, The Birthday Massacre is actually popular, I've just never seen them covered on mainstream radio or TV (save for an on-demand offering last year around Halloween).

Love the Birthday massacre >< If you like them try out The schoolyard heroes.

The Afters (a Christian band) and YES (a band from the 70's that used a lot of piano)

I'm trying to think of a Yes song that uses piano rather than other keyboards, and I'm struggling to come up with one. And I don't think it's fair to just label Yes as a 70s band considering that they had a fair amount of success in the 80s and are still going today.

How about Awaken? There are other keyboards too, but that's the first track that comes to mind when I think of Yes and piano. Still... you're right. Organ and analog synths mostly.

I think of them as a 70s band too... I wasn't a big fan of their 80s sound, and anything since then has been shaky at best. They know where their bread is buttered too, since they play almost exclusively 70s stuff in concert.

Here's a few great instrumental and ambient bands that aren't very mainstream:
-Mogwai
-Explosions in the Sky
-Unwed Sailor
-Hammock
-Stars of the Lid
-Saxon Shore

and I'd say I personally like how a lot of the bands I listen to aren't that vastly well-known, it makes the music feel a little more personal to me. I've just always thought that once a band becomes that popular it feels like the music gets perverted to an extent, and over-abused.
