Gal 3:23 But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed.

Here in 3:23 of Galatians is the first time the phrase "under the law" is used. There are vary opiinions as to what it means. Let's take a look shall we. If we take into account the grammar a reason is given that explains what the phrase "under the law" means in the very next verse. Verse 24 starts with the word "therefore". And goes on to say the Law was our schoolmaster, our tutor, our teacher. And this is said in context to the law being said that it was added because of transgressions in verse 19. So that means the Law which is our teacher told us what sin is and what to do about it. And more importantly God's will. This point is even further emphasized in verse 10 where it states, "cursed is everyone that continues not in ALL things written in the Book of the Law to do them" ALL things means just that. Ceremonial and Moral laws not just the ceremonial. as commonly taught. Then in verse 25 it states that after THE Faith has came we are no longer under the Law in respect to it being our schoolmaster, our teacher to let us know what sin is, God's will for our lives.

So what is "THE FAITH" that has come that took the place of us being under the schoolmaster, the Book of the law that was ADDED because of our transgressions?

Gal 3:10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.

Gal 3:19 Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.
Gal 3:23 But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed.
Gal 3:24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
Gal 3:25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.
Gal 3:26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
Gal 3:27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
Gal 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.
Gal 3:29 And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

No the Word of God in Galatians says we are no longer under the Schoolmaster, the Book of the Law. It says the Law was our schoolmaster, our teacher to bring us to Christ that we might be made righteous by faith. For we are all God's children through the faith that is in Christ Jesus. For we are dead nevertheless we live. Yet not us but Christ lives in us. And the life we now live in the flesh we live by the faith OF the Son of God who gave himself for us. For we who have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. That He be the first among many brethren. Do we then make void the Law through Faith? God forbid; we establish it. For the Word, God's Law is in our hearts and in our mouths ,that we do it. That is the Faith in which we preach.
(Gal 3:24 [KJV])
Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be (out) justified by faith.
(Gal 3:25 [KJV])
But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.
(Gal 3:26 [KJV])
For ye are all the children of God by (through the) faith in Christ Jesus.

if we were once under a school master and no longer there are two ways I can think of how that may happen.

1. you get kicked out or drop out and so either are not welcomed under the school master or have rejected the school master. You destory anything to do with it and look back at it in disgust.

2. You graduate so the school master has no continued authority over you because you've met the requirements under the school master, have received a diploma and hang it on your wall. You look back at it a a tough time but a needed for credentials.

Since Jesus tells us he did not come to destroy the law and the prophets he came to fulfill them we know option 1 is not the answer and it clearly is option 2. So through Christ we are graduates and no longer need to attend class. We can chew gum as we please, speak without raising our hands first and we don't need to ask permission to use the bathroom. But unlike option 1 under school is an acomplishment and gives us credentials to go beyond school.

That doesn’t really tell us what faith means, however, or how the new covenant differs from the old. The similarity is in the fact that both require righteousness of man even as some deny this requirement as necessary under the new covanent. The difference is in how that righteousness is obtained. The law can only attest to righteousness but it cannot bring it about because fallen man is on his own, still unreconciled with God. Man has no righteousness on his own, apart from Him. Faith makes God our God again and from within that union, which itself is the basis of justice or righteousness for man, God, the Source of all true righteousness, gives us the righteousness that we were made for (we were not created to be sinners), but that we lack by virtue of separation from Him.

“I will put my law in their minds
and write it on their hearts.
I will be their God,
and they will be my people.
Jer 31:33

Faith is a gift offered to all; we can turn to God…or not. But turning to Him is the first right step for man. Within ourselves it reverses Adam’s choice, which was a turning away from God. Faith restores or in any case brings man into the most basic state of justice or order that he was made for: communion with God in a relationship of subjugation of creature to Creator based on faith, hope, and, most importantly, love. “We love Him because He first loved us.”

All of that was missing in Adam; he hadn’t yet come to appreciate God and his need for Him; he didn’t yet know or value love or place the Source of that love above all else. God’s been cultivating that very appreciation, that very love, in man ever since Eden. Today is the day, as always.

“Take this Book of the Law and put it by the side of the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, that it may be there for a witness against you.

These were the laws that Moses wrote down (per God) ... they contained laws and ordinances in regard to the earthly sanctuary system. These laws were done away with ... nailed to the cross (fulfilled by Christ).

The 10 (written by the finger of God) have always been and are still in effect ... and they are written in the heart .... everybody's heart. Else how can God judge rightly?

The Holy Spirit brings us to repentance ... what is that? Recognizing our sin ... what is sin? Transgression of the Law (the 10).

John 14:26

King James Bible
But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach (schoolmaster) you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

James 2:10 points out, “For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.

(Matt. 22:37-40) that the entire Law (the 10) rests on the two great commandments: “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the great and foremost commandment. The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.” (all fulfilled by Christ).

Matthew 5:17
King James Bible
Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill. (fill them fully)

Are we free to sin (transgression of the law)? No

It's what motivates us to keep the law (the 10) and that motivation is to be LOVE.

If the motivation isn't love ... then it is works ... and we can not work our way unto salvation.

It is all about Love.

1 Corinthians 13:2

Berean Literal Bible
And if I should have prophecy and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I should have all faith so as to remove mountains, but have not love (agape love), I am nothing.

Yes! And this is why the ancient churches as well as the ECFs unanimously continued to teach that the ten commandments, summed up by the greatest, are still obligatory even as it's acknowledged that this can only be done by the Spirit, under grace, in union with God who alone can produce that love in us to the extent that we cooperate in that work of His.
