  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

So if I went into a bar (with an Irishman and a Frenchman) and ordered a pint of cider, I'd get non-alcoholic apple juice? Interesting...

I won't be surprised if you find a bartender who doesn't know what a pint is... we don't use those around here.

Not in a bar, no. In a bar I think you would get alcoholic cider or a funny look, depending on the bar. (Cider is not considered in manly drink in the U.S., and until recently it was not easy to find in many places.)

Really? So, what do you measure your (manly) drinks in?

If you buy a gallon of apple cider and let it sit for awhile, it will "harden".Fermentation, I believe, occurs when complex organic molecules are broken down into simpler molecules over time.

anaerobic metabolism of sugars usually by yeast, though occasionally by other fungi. Sake, for example, uses a white fungus to ferment. If you let it ferment from "wild" yeast you are using Brettanomyces.

Home brew FTW

You would just order 'A beer' or 'Can I get A Blue Moon (or insert your preferred beer name)' and you get a standard sized drink. I am not sure exactly what volume it is, but its virtually the same for all bars. It may even be a pint (I don't know how big a pint is so I can't really say)... we just never call them pints.

The other option is to order 'A pitcher', which just like 'A beer' is standard sized for all bars.

I have never seen anyone order beer in any other quantity.

Is it true that cider in the US is just apple juice?
Australians have this annoying habit of calling both apple juice and proper cider 'cider', so you have to read between the lines to find out which they mean. Given that the word derives from a word meaning "strong drink" it seems pecularily ironic to use it for fruit juice.

Not that there's much cider here worth drinking anyway.

A draft beer is usually 16 oz or 1 pint
