  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

ummm..Another Question! Sorry!!

I have another question ;) I'm sure you're sick of answering Protestant question, but maybe you can put up with one more :D Why do Catholics call their church "His" church? I've heard Catholics say that there church was choosen by God or something like that. Any comments would be helpful:cool:

God Bless

Any question asked in the honest pursuit of Truth will ALWAYS be welcomed here at OBOB :) Thank you for feeling so open in asking. We call it His Church because it is the one Jesus founded upon Peter, and has been carried on through apostolic succession under the protection of the Holy Spirit for nearly 2,000 years.

How do you know Jesus established the Catholic church? Jesus didn't say "on this rock will I build my Catholic church." There were other religions around when Jesus was around and I thought Jesus was Jewish.;)

Because of Matt 16:18 ~ and the fact that from Peter, right through to present day, there has been an unbroken line of Apostolic Succession.

Jesus didn't say "on this rock will I build my Catholic church." There were other religions around when Jesus was around

He didn't need to use the word CATHOLIC, because Catholic means universal, as in, one Church. Therefore, He was building His, Church, One Church, upon Peter.

and I thought Jesus was Jewish.;)
I do not understand why that would present a problem.

pentecostal girl, that is a very valid question and one that to answer fully, needs a great deal of study.

I asked the same question before I converted . . but I asked it in a little different way, a broader way . .

I asked, "Which Church today most closely resembles the Church of the Ancient Early Church in what it believes, teaches, and practices?"

It was my search into history to answer that question that eventually led me to the Catholic Church . . But suffice it to say, that it was unavoidable to see, when I began my search, the very strong resemblence of the Catholic and Orthodox Churches to the Ancient Church . . it was striking! And one of the first things that jumped out at me were the Sacraments of the Church - Baptism, Confession, Eucharist, etc . .

The Church Jesus said He would establish is HIS Church . .He did not call it "Christian" as that word had not even been invented yet . . He did not call it "Catholic" because that word had not een applied to Chrsitian's yet . . He established His Church which very soon became known as the one Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church to those who believed . .

This Church, which HE founded, was birthed and grew under the instruction and guidance of the Apostles and those they appointed to follow them in thier footsteps and in their authority . . this Church called itself Catholic from earliest times . . it was one and the same then, it is one and the same now. :)

Peace in Him!

Yes, Jesus was Jewish. And He said He had other members of his flock (besides the Jews).

Read Malachi 1:11 for a prophecy. (FYI, Malachi is the last book in Protestant Bibles.)

1:11
For from the rising of the sun even unto the going down of the same my name shall be great among the Gentiles; and in every place incense shall be offered unto my name, and a pure offering: for my name shall be great among the heathen, saith the LORD of hosts.

Read it again slowly, and see that the Gentiles in every place are offering HOW MANY offerings? a pure offering

What offering is pure? Only that of Jesus Christ, who died once only for all.
And at every Divine Liturgy (Mass) we Catholics offer that same one Offering. We don't offer it again. We offer the same.

****

As for the Church that Jesus built,
where was Peter? Where was his Chair, his seat?

Ask those who were appointed Bishops through the ages from the Apostles.

Penecostal girl,

We know Jesus establish the Catholic Church because we literally can trace our bishops straight back to Christ Himself. History is objective and a honest look at history of the Church you will see that we are the Church that Christ established. He did not established this morphed body of lose believers. He established a Church with apostolic succession and this is indeed in the bible and history can prove it also.

Hi Michelle!

Have you ever noticed what the average life expectancy is once someone is made Pope of Rome? If it wasn't for a few that were blessed with longevity it would be very short indeed

What Protestant church offers incense anyway? I think only Catholic and Orthodox fufill this prophecy, no?

Protestant churches don't even offer the "pure" offering part of the prophecy...JESUS! They offer a "symbol."

The dates are how long they served as pope, not how long they lived but the early popes were all martyrs I believe.

In the first few centuries I'd say a good many of them were martyrs. For the rest though I have very little idea. It just gave me quite a shock when I first took a good look at the list posted above and saw just how short lived most of the popes were :(

It seems odd that so many would step down after only a couple of years on the throne. I'm really not that interested in the details right now as I have much more important things to deal with (not the least my sinful nature) but I would be curious to find out some day why the chair became vacant each time.

Because they died. The Papacy is not like the Presidency, John. It isn't democratic and we can't "kick 'em our" or ask for his resignation. I can't speak for the earliest Popes, but in recent times, a new Pope is selected only when the existing Pope dies. Pope John Paul II, when recently asked if he would resign due to his failing health, replied.."To whom would I send my resignation?"

And just for a note....we don't ever refer to the Papacy as the "throne." Your bias is rearing it's ugly head.

Just an added note: I did just a little checking for you...Around the time of the Schism there was much confusion...Benedict IX was Pope in 1032, was driven out of Rome in 1044, the antipope Sylvester II was elected, but he sold his seat to Gregory, rumored to get married. However, all three were deposed at the Council of Sutri and Pope Clement II was elected.

As far as I can tell the others were either martyred or died of natural causes...Damascus died of malaria after only 23 days.
