huh? its not illegal to upload videos..

Well apparently if its something like a song or a movie if you don't own the rights to it, it is illegal. like lyric videos for example.

However, it is legal to watch them, so my question is from a Christian stand point even thought it is legal for me to watch them, should I since they may have been uploaded illegally?

Few of us are called to be intellectual property attorneys. Rather, we are called to peace, and to freedom in Christ.

In 1Cor, Paul, talking about food offered to idols, tells us not to worry about it. But if a point is made of it, then don't partake, not even for the sake of our own consciences, but of those of the people around us.

Well its not illegal to watch them or upload them. The new rules are that (like in my wedding video) if you use a copyrighted thing like a song in your video, you as the owner simply have to click a button on your video you uploaded acknowledging you have copyrighted stuff that isn't yours. Its just a legality thing. If you don't acknowledge it then the people that own that song for example can sue you since you basically are saying "Its my music!". Think of it as buying a song on Itunes. If you show it to a friend you would tell them its not a song you made. Hence your acknowledging that.

Now there are some things that are illegal on youtube. Like for example recently someone I knew uploaded the movie Avengers (under a different name). So that was illegal. Watching it on youtube by christian standards would fall under the category of dishonesty since you did not pay for it to watch it. But its really up to the person if they want to do that or not.

If you didn't know it was illegal then its not your fault. Either way don't beat yourself up to much over it. Its not like your some evil person out to do illegal things. :) However if you do feel convicted then don't watch it.

Wait a minute and hold the phone.....There is a legal way to upload stuff you have no legal right to now? When did these new rules go into affect? Cuz if I am reading your post correctly that is awesome!

The way I look at it is ..YouTube is the ones responsible for making sure there content is "legal" for public viewing. I only upload videos that I know I am allowed to. YouTube does do what they can to monitor copyrighted material. Now if I know or am unsure that it shouldn't be there I will report it to them. Again though it is youtubes responsibility in the end. My 2 cents anyways

Also be aware that youtube has revenue sharing deals with the IP holders through its advertising. So it's not quite the rip off it may seem. This is how a lot of IP material stays on YT.

That's another thing > if YouTube has advertising along with the video, I'd think they have made sure about if it is legal to upload that video :)

Also . . . Jesus says, "Freely you have received, freely give." (in Matthew 10:8)

So, there are artists who freely give, by welcoming us to share their videos.

You can go to certain church sites where the ministers have posted recordings that you are welcome to download, free of charge.

Have you considered a different source like Pandora or Spotify that does pay the artists? Availability differs depending on your country, but most of them offer free versions. That way you get your music, the artists get paid, and no worries about the ethics of it.
