Ukraine submits an application to join NATO, with big hurdles ahead.

KYIV, Ukraine — President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine responded to Russia’s claims to have annexed four Ukrainian provinces by announcing that Ukraine is applying for membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

Mr. Zelensky said Ukraine’s application could be fast-tracked similarly to the applications of Sweden and Finland.

In Brussels, the secretary general of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, said that Ukraine, like every democracy in Europe, has the right to apply for membership in the alliance, but he cautioned that a decision about accepting a new member is taken by all 30 allied countries by consensus.

U.S. officials have said that they will not appease Mr. Putin by quashing Kyiv’s ambition to join the alliance. But Washington and its European allies have also been wary of further antagonizing Russia and risking a wider war, and it remains to be seen how Mr. Putin’s annexation of parts of Ukrainian territory may alter the alliance’s calculus.

“De facto, we have already proven interoperability with the Alliance’s standards, they are real for Ukraine — real on the battlefield and in all aspects of our interaction,” Zelensky said.

“Today, Ukraine is applying to make it de jure. Under a procedure consistent with our significance for the protection of our entire community. Under an accelerated procedure,” the statement continued.

Well, that's dangerous. Putin has already been eying his nukes. If NATO goes to war with Russia, he'll probably feel inclined to use them, considering he'll get curbstomped.
or maybe it will keep him from using the nukes and instead cause him to reconsider ( since he knows he is no match.

That would certainly be the desired outcome, but I don't get strong rationality vibes from Putin. Then again, Russia's military might reject a nuclear option, considering the prospect of annihilation.

Putin's speech regarding annexed areas was aggressive towards the west, but especially the US.

NOTE THIS LINK IS TO THE KREMLIN. I am posting it so that we can see Putin's words, not as an endorsement. I followed a link from the NY Times to the page.

Here are some selections of a quite long speech. I have tried to quote the parts that particularly relate to the US and the west.

Signing of treaties on accession of Donetsk and Lugansk people's republics and Zaporozhye and Kherson regions to Russia

When the Soviet Union collapsed, the West decided that the world and all of us would permanently accede to its dictates. In 1991, the West thought that Russia would never rise after such shocks and would fall to pieces on its own. This almost happened. We remember the horrible 1990s, hungry, cold and hopeless. But Russia remained standing, came alive, grew stronger and occupied its rightful place in the world.

Meanwhile, the West continued and continues looking for another chance to strike a blow at us, to weaken and break up Russia, which they have always dreamed about, to divide our state and set our peoples against each other, and to condemn them to poverty and extinction. They cannot rest easy knowing that there is such a great country with this huge territory in the world, with its natural wealth, resources and people who cannot and will not do someone else’s bidding.

The West is ready to cross every line to preserve the neo-colonial system which allows it to live off the world, to plunder it thanks to the domination of the dollar and technology, to collect an actual tribute from humanity, to extract its primary source of unearned prosperity, the rent paid to the hegemon. The preservation of this annuity is their main, real and absolutely self-serving motivation. This is why total de-sovereignisation is in their interest. This explains their aggression towards independent states, traditional values and authentic cultures, their attempts to undermine international and integration processes, new global currencies and technological development centres they cannot control. It is critically important for them to force all countries to surrender their sovereignty to the United States.

I want to underscore again that their insatiability and determination to preserve their unfettered dominance are the real causes of the hybrid war that the collective West is waging against Russia. They do not want us to be free; they want us to be a colony.

The West is counting on impunity, on being able to get away with anything. As a matter of fact, this was actually the case until recently. Strategic security agreements have been trashed; agreements reached at the highest political level have been declared tall tales; firm promises not to expand NATO to the east gave way to dirty deception as soon as our former leaders bought into them; missile defence, intermediate-range and shorter-range missile treaties have been unilaterally dismantled under far-fetched pretexts.

False labels like “rogue country” or “authoritarian regime” are already available, and are used to stigmatise entire nations and states, which is nothing new. There is nothing new in this: deep down, the Western elites have remained the same colonisers. They discriminate and divide peoples into the top tier and the rest.

To emphasise, one of the reasons for the centuries-old Russophobia, the Western elites’ unconcealed animosity toward Russia is precisely the fact that we did not allow them to rob us during the period of colonial conquests and forced the Europeans to trade with us on mutually beneficial terms.

Western countries have been saying for centuries that they bring freedom and democracy to other nations. Nothing could be further from the truth. Instead of bringing democracy they suppressed and exploited, and instead of giving freedom they enslaved and oppressed. The unipolar world is inherently anti-democratic and unfree; it is false and hypocritical through and through.

It is their destructive policies, wars and plunder that have unleashed today’s massive wave of migrants. Millions of people endure hardships and humiliation or die by the thousands trying to reach Europe.

But the Anglo-Saxons believe sanctions are no longer enough and now they have turned to subversion. It seems incredible but it is a fact – by causing explosions on Nord Stream’s international gas pipelines passing along the bottom of the Baltic Sea, they have actually embarked on the destruction of Europe’s entire energy infrastructure.

The dictates of the US are backed up by crude force, on the law of the fist. Sometimes it is beautifully wrapped sometimes there is no wrapping at all but the gist is the same – the law of the fist. Hence, the deployment and maintenance of hundreds of military bases in all corners of the world, NATO expansion, and attempts to cobble together new military alliances, such as AUKUS and the like. Much is being done to create a Washington-Seoul-Tokyo military-political chain. All states that possess or aspire to genuine strategic sovereignty and are capable of challenging Western hegemony, are automatically declared enemies.

We have already heard about the deterrence of Russia, China and Iran. I believe next in line are other countries of Asia, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East, as well as current US partners and allies. After all, we know that when they are displeased, they introduce sanctions against their allies as well – against this or that bank or company. This is their practice and they will expand it. They have everything in their sights, including our next-door neighbours – the CIS countries.

I want to make special note of the fact that there is every reason to believe that the Western elites are not going to look for constructive ways out of the global food and energy crisis that they and they alone are to blame for, as a result of their long-term policy, dating back long before our special military operation in Ukraine, in Donbass. They have no intention of solving the problems of injustice and inequality. I am afraid they would rather use other formulas they are more comfortable with.

The current neocolonial model is ultimately doomed; this much is obvious. But I repeat that its real masters will cling to it to the end. They simply have nothing to offer the world except to maintain the same system of plundering and racketeering.

They do not give a damn about the natural right of billions of people, the majority of humanity, to freedom and justice, the right to determine their own future. They have already moved on to the radical denial of moral, religious, and family values.

Let’s answer some very simple questions for ourselves. Now I would like to return to what I said and want to address also all citizens of the country – not just the colleagues that are in the hall – but all citizens of Russia: do we want to have here, in our country, in Russia, “parent number one, parent number two and parent number three” (they have completely lost it!) instead of mother and father? Do we want our schools to impose on our children, from their earliest days in school, perversions that lead to degradation and extinction? Do we want to drum into their heads the ideas that certain other genders exist along with women and men and to offer them gender reassignment surgery? Is that what we want for our country and our children? This is all unacceptable to us. We have a different future of our own.

Let me repeat that the dictatorship of the Western elites targets all societies, including the citizens of Western countries themselves. This is a challenge to all. This complete renunciation of what it means to be human, the overthrow of faith and traditional values, and the suppression of freedom are coming to resemble a “religion in reverse” – pure Satanism.

Today, we are fighting so that it would never occur to anyone that Russia, our people, our language, or our culture can be erased from history.

Not going to happen until at least after this war is over, and the war has to end with all the Russians out of Ukraine, or Ukraine formerly cedes over Russian occupied territory (that seems unlikely for the time being). That is according to the NATO rules, applicants cannot be involved in a conflict with another country and that includes being occupied.

On top of that it takes a unanimous vote of all the members, and countries like Turkey will be a problem. Prior to the war, even Germany was a problem with them getting their gas from Russia. Of course this will add fuel to the speculation that the recent pipeline bombing came from the west rather than Russia since their are various reasons it would be in the US interest for that.

Actually, Nord Stream was shut down by Russia at the beginning of September. Gazpom, the Russian company that runs the pipeline, claimed there was a leak in one of the turbines in the pipeline that they could not repair due to western sanctions; though European nations claimed it was Russia's "revenge" against European countries for their support of Ukraine. It has been shut down since.

It is in NATOs interest to supply Ukraine with weapons and support its military efforts to reclaim its sovereign territory but not in its interest to engage in an active war that could go nuclear. So Ukraine can only be allowed into the alliance after hostilities cease and borders are finalised

The best liars mingle truths and appeal to passions evident in the hearts of the reader. This speech was saturated with Marxist conceptions of colonialism and exploitation which are mainly false. America grew rich without the benefits of an empire and in many ways, the European empires were burdens more than assets and costly due to the wars and military infrastructure required to maintain them. People are trying to get into Western countries because of their success in building working economies and productive societies.

That said, clearly, there is something deeply wrong with gender reassignment therapies, training school kids to be gay and to think of their genders as choices rather than biological inheritance.

Also, the secularization of the West and the diminishing role of the traditional Christian religion in determining the course of its culture is undermining the legitimacy of the Western right to rule. Here Putin presents a culture that is moving in a Christian direction as an alternative.

It is hard to take his comments about freedom seriously when he is the one who invaded a sovereign country intent on removing its sovereignty and he has faked various referendums in that country in a complete mockery of democratic freedoms. Ask the Ukrainian people about freedom and I am sure they will not agree with his definitions.

The accusation that the USA was responsible for the Nord Stream pipeline attacks is interesting as it clearly fits American foreign policy objectives of the last 3 decades to destroy Europe's dependence on Russian energy. It is also possible that Putin did this to sow distrust between America and Europe.

So yes, it does sound dangerous.

Now that his military has been exposed as ineffective, Putin's only leverage is the threat of using his nuclear arsenal. If he were to actually use it, the blowback from the global community, including China, would not be worth whatever military advantage he gained.

As per NATO charter it cannot be acted upon while Ukraine is actively engaged in hostile activity.......Good reason for them to push Pukin's thugs out.......

The great irony here, is that one of Putin's objectives in this invasion was to weaken NATO. And that's backfired spectatularly. Sweden and Finland dropped their long-held neutrality and applied for membership. And they are no de facto Members of NATO, even if Turkey is holding a veto on official membership.

And when the war ends, there's a good chance that Ukraine will join. Events have not been kind to Vladimir.

Extreme right, in fact. And like all such dictators, he eventually started believing his own press releases and got into something he couldn't handle.

Sounds good to me
Too bad he's a bad strategist and got himself into an unwinnable war, eh?

Soon, you'll have to find another totalitarian to cheer on. Don't worry, there is ample supply.
