  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I choose to deal with the seriousness of the "news" they had posted regarding "USE" due its terrible nature, whether parody or not.

It's disgraceful and innappropriate either way. Both sides of the political debate have their extremists, and that means that, yes, there are both right-wing extremists and left-wing extremists. At some point they sort of meet in a strange extremist land that I never want to go to.

It's a confusing mess sometimes, and those of us who see it as a disgrace to joke and laugh about things must stand together, no matter our political leanings.
I don't know if I totally agree.

The web site's "USE" story prompted me to study Sam Brownback's position on abortion, and find out that he is against all abortions, including those of pregnancies from rape. That's good to know.

But we're not done. Here's a link to a T-Shirt you can buy, which reads "I was USED twice, and all I got was this lousy T-Shirt."
Should have been:

I threw up a little when I read this:

Sam Brownback is the inspiration for this grassroots campaign called, “Cry USE not RAPE”. We have concluded that the acronym U.S.E. (Unplanned Sexual Event), when used regularly to replace the word “rape”, will remove the stigma associated with this sometimes unpleasant situation. It is our mission to protect the innocent lives of the babies that are part of His plan and eliminate the excuses given by many women when a precious baby just isn’t convienient.

Now, I'm pro-life, but I don't honestly think that the pro-life argument should be taken to the extent that we gloss over, minimize the horrific effects, or glorify rape in order to condemn abortion.

Any thoughts?
Well, they already replaced SODOMY, ADULTARY, and FORNICATION with a host of more "politically correct" secular terminology. The person who committed the act, likely doesn't feel that he did anying wrong (like so many other groups), so why not protect his rights also....?

Chaz:

I don't think the above statement is supposed to be a parody. It's the real deal. Amazing how similar it is to the BaptistsforBrownback, though. Makes me wonder if their "campaign" was all that exaggerated.

I agree entirely that it is terrible to use such a subject, even in parody, in order to score political points. To me it's a pretty typical illustration of the character of the people doing it though.

Exaggeration is one thing. Saying that a political figure said something that they didn't is in an entirely different ballpark though.

Parody in good fun, like the Onion, where any quotes and silly actions are commited by fictional people is entirely different than the site in question.

Because he didn't obtain the victim's consent.

I swear, what is so hard to grasp about the concept that "no one gets hurt" = OK but "someone gets hurt" = not OK? I see the argument above from fundies around here at least once a day.

I don't know which is sadder, the fact that people take such a obvious parody as real illustrating that warning labels really are required for obvious facts, or the fact that people are so wanting to demonize those that they disagree with politically that they'll believe without questioning even the worst about someone.

I figured it was a parody as soon as I started looking around on their website.

What the heck? An unplanned sexual advance is making the two-backed beast in the library with your boyfriend after hours, not being raped and traumatized. Trying to invent a euphemism for this is vile.

//edit: If this is parody, it's a good case for Poe's Law. I've seen sites that are just this idiotic that were actually real- the line can be fuzzy.
