  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

U.S.E. not Rape

I threw up a little when I read this:

Sam Brownback is the inspiration for this grassroots campaign called, “Cry USE not RAPE”. We have concluded that the acronym U.S.E. (Unplanned Sexual Event), when used regularly to replace the word “rape”, will remove the stigma associated with this sometimes unpleasant situation. It is our mission to protect the innocent lives of the babies that are part of His plan and eliminate the excuses given by many women when a precious baby just isn’t convienient.

*emphasis mine

http://baptistsforbrown2008.wordpress.com/use-updates/

But we're not done. Here's a link to a T-Shirt you can buy, which reads "I was USED twice, and all I got was this lousy T-Shirt."

Now, I'm pro-life, but I don't honestly think that the pro-life argument should be taken to the extent that we gloss over, minimize the horrific effects, or glorify rape in order to condemn abortion.

Any thoughts?

How does calling a rape an "unplanned sexual event" remove its stigma? It won't be any less "unpleasant" an experience. Rapes are not horrific simply because of stigmas associated with the word "rape", but because they are horrific in fact.

And might this wordplay confuse people into thinking that spontaneous, consensual sex is equivalent to rape?

How horrible!

Honestly, how can someone defend rape? It's just wrong.

They aren't defending rape. They are trying to minimize the chances that a woman who has become pregnant because of a rape will choose to abort her child.

Thanks for clearing that up. They're doing it wrong though. Horribly wrong.

I don't know which is sadder, the fact that people take such a obvious parody as real illustrating that warning labels really are required for obvious facts, or the fact that people are so wanting to demonize those that they disagree with politically that they'll believe without questioning even the worst about someone.

Yeah... kind of like church sites posting quotes from the onion without realizing it was parody...

What's really sad is there was even the idea of USE to make fun of.

Man.. if this article you posted is ANY indication of the type of journalism there.. i mean.. wth? People actually READ this BS? lawl.

IT'S NOT JOURNALISM IT'S PARODY.

Perhaps since it seems necessary that we have warning labels that say "product will be hot after heating" and "do not iron clothes while wearing" we need legislation requiring that such sites be cleary labeled as parody.

Already there is a major problem with only a small percentage of rapists going to jail, or even being prosecuted.

This would just further the pain inflicted on women, children, and men.

Perhaps a campaign supporting totally closed adoption for women who are raped who carry the fetuses to term would be feasible, but changing the name of a serious, violent, painful crime into a cheerful initial is truly disgraceful.

ETA: There seems to be some major debate whether B4B is a parody site or not. I hope it a parody site. The pain that a real campaign like that could cause would be horrible.

I would seriously question the intelligence of anyone who to whom the parody nature of the site isn't immediately obvious. But then again the site does do a good job of charicturizing the Right. It's portrayal is pretty much exactly what most who hate the Right believe it to be.

Wow. Color me surprised.

All this time I though parody was the sincerest form of imitation.

I choose to deal with the seriousness of the "news" they had posted regarding "USE" due its terrible nature, whether parody or not.

It's disgraceful and innappropriate either way. Both sides of the political debate have their extremists, and that means that, yes, there are both right-wing extremists and left-wing extremists. At some point they sort of meet in a strange extremist land that I never want to go to.

It's a confusing mess sometimes, and those of us who see it as a disgrace to joke and laugh about things must stand together, no matter our political leanings.
