Two Princes - Anyone else notice this?

I don't think that this is what the Spin Doctors meant when they wrote this song, but this is what I think when I hear it.

I, personally, visualise the two princes the song refers to as Jesus and Satan, with the latter singing some of the lines, and being very honest about it.

The prince that sings makes life with him sound so wonderful and glamorous, but he clearly states some of the following...

"You marry him, your father will condone you... You marry me, your father will disown you..."

Marry could mean to just follow in general, and father meaning our Heavenly Father, God. Condone, as far as I can remember, means to give blessings. Disown, of course, means exactly what it says.

"I ain't got no future or family tree..."

Meaning that if you choose to marry him, you don't really have much to look forward to.

This is what I thought the after listening to the song a few times. I see myself doing this alot, applying God to things that aren't really about God, and sometimes, I am amazed at what I find.

That is actually a really cool interpretation. I agree with you that the Spin Doctors probably didn't mean it like that But it makes sense. The Prince of Peace vs. prince of the world...now I'll think of that when I hear this song.

I think people read too much into things or try to play songs off with spiritual meanings they don't really have. :\

Why do people constantly feel the need to spiritualise the secular? it's a song about a guy trying to get a girl to chose him over some other guy, simple as!!

Even so, it's like changing the words in a song to better suit where you're at in life. Music is art and as such, is open to interpretation -- the viewer or listener appreciates, individually. Two people will perhaps never get the same thing from it. You take from it what speaks to you. Sometimes, you add in your own mindset, experiences, spirituality, whatever... and it remains art. It's just more personalized. Some would say that is what perfects the art itself.
