  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I've been having a lot of problems lately finding a TV show I feel OK watching. My girlfriend and I both started watching a show another member or two had commented on here was really good. We were enjoying it but the characters took the Lord's name in vain a few times. Now I feel very guilty watching it so I try to differ to other shows. Every new show I start I weight the risk of whether they'll be taking the Lord's name in vain and when they do I shut it off. Do you all find yourself in the same boat, or are you able to look past it?

I was frustrated that even Modern Family had this happen! I thought primetime TV was supposed to be free of that.

Primetime TV isn't free of the insinuation of anything, and taking the Lord's name in vain is the least of it. Probably the worst trend today is the making of evil men the protagonists of the stories.

But use the Philippian Prescription (Philippians 4:8) as a guide to what you watch.

Tv sadly has little to offer these days. I find many not all of what's on for cooking shows is calm. I watch some of the old series, I mean really old, like Flipper, on Hulu. Then there's alway Duck Dynasty, and The Middle has been quite harmless so far. And some of the new stuff like Marvel's Agents of Shield I think is okay. I do think the suggestion from above is good, Phil 4:8, and the results of that will differ for everyone. It's realy between you and the Lord. And certainly if something is making you feel guilty, there's no entertainment in that.

Yes, Phil. 4.8 is a good guide (and the Lord Jesus personifies all those things mentioned there.)

The 'Off' switch is often very useful for the TV.

I know how you feel. Some guy I'm subscribed to on Youtube won't stop swearing and taking God's name in vain. I'm starting to get a teensy bit tired of it, but this guy is literally addicted to his anger (I've prayed for him a lot but it doesn't seem to be working).

Well as for myself I haven't watched hardly any of the mainstream channels (ABC, CBS, NBC.....) in a few years. As I recently told a friend of mine I don't like the morals that they display. Temptation is hard enough to resist without inviting it into my living room. When I do watch TV it is mostly things on The History Channel , TLC, or one of the food channels. Those choices aren't always perfect either but I find far far less issues with them.

I completely understand your problem with taking the Lord's name in vain. It is a quite common thing on TV now days. I too find it bothersome though I never felt like I was sinning when I heard someone else do it but it does play into my desire never to watch something again. I think the sin comes from how we handle it. If we continue to watch then I think sin is creeping in. Just my thoughts. Ultimately you have to pray about it and let the Holy Spirit guide you in this.
