Generally speaking, when you're caught committing a crime, there isn't some 1.5 year investigation that follows where people try to figure out what crime you committed.

Federal investigations can take years before charges are ever filed. This is especially true in cases that are complex and involve several people. What's happening in this case isn't unusual.

Nope...I would suggest that if you want to get a grasp of how serious it is....take a look at the last investigation of Trump.

What you'll ultimately have, if you have anything, is a bunch of people claiming to be duped into a plot....and people denying involvement.

The scheme was to submit the fake elector forms before Pence counts them on Jan 6th.
They wanted Pence to declare that there are multiple elector forms for an area and hence discount both of them, he was then to only count those that were left and then declare Trump/Pence as the winner of the 2020 election.
It's all laid out in the document that Trump's lawyer, Eastman wrote, it has been published, you can search for it online if you are interested.

Well that's just it, right?

They would have had the bogus forms on week 1.

It's only a matter of time to match names to forms.

The problem is that putting those people in jail does nothing for you politically if Trump stays free.

The result, if people are criminally charged for signing and submitting fake elector forms is that in future people won't try this again.
That is the goal, to stop this being an avenue to thwart the will of the people in a democratic election.

Bannon has been criminally charged twice now, and Roger Stone was charged, so was Michael Flynn so it seems that political people can and do get charged eventually. It just seems to take a long time.
