Threat came in a call earlier this month, in which carmakers feared punishment if prices go up
When President Trump convened CEOs of some of the country’s top automakers for a call earlier this month, he issued a warning: They better not raise car prices because of tariffs.

Trump told the executives that the White House would look unfavorably on such a move, leaving some of them rattled and worried they would face punishment if they increased prices, people with knowledge of the call said.

*laughs* oh man this is your stable genius guys...the guys got to be insane, or a joke he's like, "hey guys lets see how idiotic a move I can make before I go too far."

step 1. put tarrifs on cars to make more cars made in the US.
step 2. Tell those effected by tariffs to not increase prices
step 3.....??

'May have been mistaken': WSJ editorial nails businesses that were 'optimistic' for Trump

A day after the Journal reported that Trump warned auto executives not to raise prices ahead of the enactment of his steep 25% tariff, the paper's conservative editorial board ridiculed the president.

"One bad policy decision inevitably leads to another to compensate for the damage, and that’s already true of President Trump’s new 25% tariffs on auto imports," the Journal chided.

Noting that Trump reportedly warned auto execs not to raise prices in response to his tariffs, the board sarcastically praised the president for finally "recognize[ing] in private that his tariffs aren’t cost-free for business or consumers, which wasn’t previously clear."

During the campaign, Trump attacked Harris, dubbing her 'Comrade Kamala' who wanted to "institute socialist price controls."

Good luck.

Last weekend, I purchased a used car from a Chevrolet dealer. The salesman recommended I come in Friday night to pick up the car as they have been swamped on the weekends. Consumers are rushing to buy now before the tarrifs impact prices (and that was true in my case - I wanted to buy before the used market goes up, pressured by the higher price of new cars.). He claimed they sold 46 new cars the weekend prior (this was a large dealer in Texas....but 46 cars incredible for one weekend).

He also stated GM had already sent notice to dealers indicating new car prices will rise 25%....the effective date was pending.....

I had no idea that Comrade Trump wanted to introduce command economy.
His MAGA followers on the forum are quiet on the issue because FOX news hasn't told them yet why this is a good thing.

There are many voices on Fox concerned or alarmed at the tarriffs. Check out Journal Editorial Report or Special Report.

Yes, but they disagree with Trump, so they are ignored. And if there are too many dissenting voices, there is always OAN or RT.

The average Trump voter would rather change his news source than his opinion.

Trump says he ‘couldn’t care less’ if foreign automakers raise prices due to tariffs

Asked what his recent message was to motor industry CEOs, and whether he had warned them against raising prices, Trump said, “The message is congratulations, if you make your car in the United States, you’re going to make a lot of money. If you don’t, you’re going to have to probably come to the United States, because if you make your car in the United States, there is no tariff.”

When pressed if he told CEOs not to raise prices, as reported in the The Wall Street Journal, Trump added, “No, I never said that. I couldn’t care less if they raise prices, because people are going to start buying American-made cars.”

Trump continued, “I couldn’t care less. I hope they raise their prices, because if they do, people are gonna buy American-made cars. We have plenty.”

The president also said the tariffs would be permanent.

“Absolutely, they’re permanent, sure. The world has been ripping off the United States for the last 40 years and more. And all we’re doing is being fair, and frankly, I’m being very generous,” Trump said.

Autarchy didn't work in 1930's Japan and Germany, and it won't work today in the United States.
