Former President Donald Trump told a crowd of supporters that he intended to reject a prominent evangelist’s request that he refrain from cursing during speeches, although he suggested he was making an effort to take his advice.

Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee for president of the United States, addressed a crowd of supporters at a rally in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on Saturday. A clip of the speech shared on X shows the former president praising Franklin Graham, CEO of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and the charitable organization Samaritan’s Purse, as “a man I like,” adding that he admired him “so much” before recalling how “he wrote me a letter.”

“He said, ‘President, I love your speaking. Your ability to speak is incredible. Your storytelling is great, but it could be so much better if you didn’t use foul language,’” Trump said as he reflected on the content of the letter. Trump responded to the plea by declaring, “he’s wrong.”

The idea that "I would only vote for someone that would qualify to be my pastor" is not shared by a lot of voters in America. Most of us would never have voted in our life time - were that the criteria.

People often point out how this or that politician would make a poor pastor... and I agree that such is the case. But I don't ask the plumber, or the mechanic or my doctor if they would/could qualify as my pastor -- as a condition for service. Rather I focus on whether they can do the job well or not.

I think a more relevant topic for both candidates is whether or not they would be turning the white house into a very expensive Assisted Living facility or if they are still able at such advanced age to "do the job well" Given all this business about world war III, mob attackes against Jews in California trying to attend their church, attacks on Israel, Attacks on the open seas against merchant ships and using first-time-ever ballistic missiles to sink merchant ships... etc. -- what we really need is a very competent commander in chief --.

A lot of American are getting more and more uncomfortable with the "meanderer-in-chief" idea where one simply dismisses it all by feeling sorry for their leader in his declining years - having to deal with such adult, complex issues -- more than anything else.

I'm not looking for a pastor to be president. On the other hand if I am looking for a plumber or mechanic or doctor I will insist on one who does not have a foul mouth and doesn't insert political or social commentary where it does not belong. I don't mind serving or being served by anyone except if they are obnoxious. They don't get my business, and I would look for any justifiable reason not to serve them. Likewise with Trump. If he acts like a professional I could consider voting for him. But he doesn't. The other guy isn't competent any longer to be a professional. So we have two people who just don't qualify for my vote. One because he is a hack with huge morals problems. The other who has promoted the killing of innocent human beings on a massive scale. Never mind wanting to elect a pastor. We aren't even close to that. Except some pastors can themselves be pretty bad.

That's a terrible description of what he said during the speech.

He was at a Franklin Graham hosted event and said, speaking to the crowd as well as the host in question, that Franklin Graham wrote to him and requested he stop cussing so much.

He said for the sake of Franklin Graham he's not cussing at this event, but there's times you want that extra emphasis that saying some words allows

After the Franklin Graham event, he had another event that wasn't hosted by Graham so he was going to use the cuss words for emphasis sometimes

Most of America uses cuss words. I once stubbed my toe in church and broke it, it took everything in me not to say a word that started with S in that moment.

Facing what are are facing in this country, him being in everyone's cross hairs, I don't care if he uses the occasional cuss word for emphasis.

I don't think using vulgar words is a sin. It's just language of common people. It's only offensive to a few. The Bible used to contain words we now deem inappropriate.

Let Trump be Trump. There's really nothing wrong with it.

There's a lot more wrong with throwing open the borders of this country to every criminal and terrorist the world over. If we are getting particular....

I'll go for the guy who's not intentionally putting my family at risk... Don't care if he cusses.

Yes, and unfortunately I have a list of invectives that would set holy water boiling several miles away. That doesn't make it right. When I read the OP, a bad joke popped in my head that used an invective. Still doesn't make it right.

Several safe comments came to mind but every one looked like I was making excuses for him, and that wasn't the case.

Cuss words aren't classy or presidential, but they're ultimately just a combination of sounds. Although I might give similar advice, I would be surprised if he took it. Especially at his age. His habits are set by now and his constituents don't seem to mind.

Agreed. Not that it's necessarily deemed inappropriate, but I remember snickering with childhood friends about "wild ass" being mentioned in the Bible.

You have set the bar too low. You seem to have become accustomed to his degrading and dehumanizing comments and behaviors.

Profanity is the effort of a weak mind to express itself.

Is that because you favor Trump?
Trump gave no specifics, everything was the best ever, the greatest ever, the lowest taxes ever, but I could understand what he was saying.

Clear lies. Sometimes truth is more complex and detailed. That is why I think someone like Pete Buttigieg could have eviscerated Trump.. or Biden for that matter.

Trump isn't a polished politician. In fact, he didn't get into politics until he ran for president in 2016.

He's not going to censor his speech at his age and experience.

Besides, coming from NY, talking trash is part of his culture. But at least he gets things
done. Unlike the career politician Joe Biden.

Pete Buttigieg is full of more lies. He’s an unsuccessful mayor who has done nothing.
RFK Jr. could have cleaned their clocks but he’s plain nutty on some things.

Thus we have the contemporary disunited states of America.

But one cannot compare the lies of other politicians to the lies of Trump. he is our of the park over the top.

In my opinion, Joe Biden is the typical politician who tells lies almost every day.
