Just to be clear, from the Constitution (Art. 1, Section 2): "The House of Representatives shall chuse their Speaker and other Officers; and shall have the sole Power of Impeachment."

Once the House votes, the President is impeached. The Senate then holds a trial: "The Senate shall have the sole Power to try all Impeachments. When sitting for that Purpose, they shall be on Oath or Affirmation. When the President of the United States is tried, the Chief Justice shall preside: And no Person shall be convicted without the Concurrence of two thirds of the Members present." (Art. 1, Section 3)

So now that the President has been impeached, again, the Senate holds the trial. Think of it like a criminal trial -- first the suspect is indicted and then a trial is held to find if he is guilty. While Impeachment is not exactly like an indictment, it is similar in that the person is indicted or impeached and afterward a trial is held. Just like in a trial, a "Not Guilty" verdict does not mean the person was not indicted -- in the same way, the President will still be "impeached" even if not convicted on the impeachment charges.

If an annual budget gets passed in the house but the Senate (which has said they won't approve it) has yet to vote on it yet...

Is there a budget?

It would be much easier if the DC DA was to file charges...that might actually get traction. I doubt it...but it's a possibility.

Yes, Nixon was held to account by his own party and chose to resign. Trump went dark for a few days then comes out calling this behavior "appropriate."

Then it goes on in Section 3, Clause 6. The Senate shall have the sole power to try all impeachments. When sitting for that Purpose, they shall be on Oath or Affirmation. A plain reading of the text suggests impeachments are bills or resolutions that come to the Senate to be tried. Impeachment is just the name for the process that happens in the House of Representatives. The impeachment trial is a separate matter handled entirely by the Senate with the Chief Justice presiding over it. They’re two separate things. It doesn’t say anywhere that a president isn’t impeached until it is confirmed by the Senate in some way. The Senate has no say in what an impeachment is because that power is only assigned to the House.

The House won’t send the Articles of Impeachment to the Senate for a while. As was noted, there is precedent for holding a Senate trial after the accused is out of office. Democrats want the 2 new senators from GA to be sworn in. Then they’ll have 50 votes to convict Donald Trump. They’ll need 17 Republicans to agree. They might get 4 or 5. But as of now, it’s unlikely that Trump will be convicted. However, just to get it on record that he’s the only President in history to be twice impeached could be enough.

I've seen reports that 10 Republican Senators are ready to vote for Impeachment charges, and that as many as 20 are considering voting to convict.

Also, the delay isn't sending the Articles of Impeachment, rather, it is the Senate is adjourned and won't go back into session until after the inauguration.

Several reasons:
1. Becuase it is the duty of members of congress to uphold the constitution and follow the process required when a president commits high crimes and misdemeanours
2. To set a precedent to notify all future presidents that this behaviour isn't acceptable and is an impeachable offence.
3. To heighten the historical factor of this even, so that it isn't soon forgotten
4. As the first step to remove a clear and present danger from the USA (it is now over to the Senate to follow through on their duty)
5. As punishment to Trump's presidential legacy and to halt the pension of $200K for Trump.
6. An opportunity for each Congressperson and Senator to document whether they support law and order and democracy or whether they support tyranny for the sake of partisan politics.

If Trump goes on to be criminally charged and convicted of inciting a violent insurrection, then those that opposed impeachment will look extraordinarily bad in the history books.
If Mitch refuses to fast track the Senate trial and If Trump incites more violence, then this stain will be on Mitch.

They'll just spin it as him being the most unfairly persecuted president in history.

The impeachment won't happen...the vote to impeach has...but it was a real waste of time.

But isn’t it fun to watch Trump break another record.
