The most bipartisan impeachment in American history. Consider what that means. The Republicans who defended the president’s actions and continue to have made one of the gravest miscalculations of their entire careers.

Just wanted to put this out, will link when I can find an article. Donald Trump has just been impeached a second time. 232 votes for, if I heard correctly.
That must be a record.

As is being the only President who was impeached twice. With any luck he will also be the first one convicted after he is out of office which has only happened to one other federal official.

Seems like a thoroughly pointless exercise to me. What's the actual punishment besides a cooling off ban from YouTube?

He has to be convicted by the Senate before any punishment kicks in. i.e. losing Presidential benefits, etc.

Additionally, the Senate could then vote to prohibit from ever holding office again (with a majority vote).

Revocation of all post presidential benefits from the government (Pension, travel stipend and security) and prohibition of holding any federal office in the future which is the thing that matters.

Loses his retirement salary, travel allowance, secret service protection and will likely be barred from running for office again. And maybe more, anything I've missed?

ETA - dang, too slow, what he ---^ said. :)

Also, puts GOP Congresspeople on record for supporting the guy who launched a violent attack on their workplace.

whats the purpose? Same thing that the Ukraine impeachment did, send a signal that such behaviour won' be tolerated without some kind of response. Even if it fails to convict trump this time, the worse thing that could have happened was to ignore it.

The impeachment is the trial itself.

And the rules of the senate are going to make the opening of any proceedings take place after 1:00 pm on the 20th of January at the very earliest.

And you cannot impeach a former president. No constitutional basis for that. And besides...we really don't want to be able to impeach former presidents like Clinton for all the stunts he pulled. (Monika was only the tip of a very large iceberg)
Bad bad bad precedent to set.

Then there's all the stuff that Obama did while in office...

Then while you are at it get Joe's lined up for the purgery charges he incurred during Trump's impeachment. You know...when Hunter was selling access to his Daddy and Obama.

Except the impeachment occurred while he was still in office. I don't think it is as clear if the conviction can occur after he leaves office; I suspect that will be something for the courts to interpret.

My question, what happens to any pardons issued by Pres. Trump between now and when he leaves office? I think a decent argument can be made, if Pres. Trump is convicted by the Senate, that any pardons he made after the impeachment are voided, if he is convicted.

He should ask for the income back that he didnt take.

I always thought that stunt of not taking our money was a symbol that he wasnt really working for us.
Except he did take it and allegedly donated it.

Or that he's just not very good with money. Might have something to do about losing all that money he got from daddy while bankrupting casinos.
