WASHINGTON ― President Donald Trump is no fan of an emerging nickname on Wall Street mocking his on-again, off-again approach to tariffs.

Trump lashed out at a reporter on May 28 who asked for his response to financial analysts embracing a new term called "TACO trade." The acronym stands for "Trump always chickens out" ‒ a jab at the president's propensity to impose or threaten steep tariffs on imports, only to later back off.

Clearly, those financial analysts prefer the globalization of trade between nations which causes American citizens and American businesses to get the short end of the deal.

Free trade and globalization were policies promoted by conservative American figures such as Ronald Reagan, George W. Bush, Mitt Romney, Paul Ryan, and Newt Gingrich. Democrats traditionally opposed free trade and globalization, instead supporting labor unions.

As a supporter of Reagan-Bush free trade and U.S. foreign policy, I am baffled by the transformation of the current Republican Party. Today, they are more isolationist than Democrats were 30 years ago.

However, we did not get free trade with the globalization of trade. European nations have had Value Added Taxes on American goods for decades. China has stolen intellectual properties and China uses extremely cheap labor in their manufacturing plants. Nations all over the world have taken advantage of the USA because of the free trade and US foreign policy and the globalization of trade to the point where the millions of American workers are not earning a fair wage. American businesses and American farmers have known for decades that other nations tariff and/or tax our goods and services big time in foreign nations.

You have made valid points.

I believe in free trade and a free market as solutions for the 21st century, but acknowledge that free trade has left many Americans behind.

But my question is what is President Trump's objective?

Good post but it is too light on the democrats and their support for the system, in spite of having union backing. Clinton, Obama and Biden favored free trade and globalization. American basically laid out the entire world trading system. It was Clinton that signed onto the WTO. Before the WTO the rounds of trade talks were from the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade. (GATT) GATT was founded during the Truman administration. The Monetary system was founded at Bretton Woods which created the IMF and the World Bank. "The agreement created the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank (IBRD), both of which were heavily influenced by US interests and designed to support a US-dollar-centric financial order." Bretton Woods Agreement and the Institutions It Created

The global system set up mostly with America in mind has been abused. Trump though is far from being balanced and is using trade as a stick to even our best allies. Trump's motivation on tariffs too seems to be to provide revenue where he can maintain the tax cuts that favor the rich. So way over the top, with the wrong motivations versus the former Presidents that to some extent just favor a world system. Can we ever elect someone that is not selling out the rest of America? I fear not because no one has that kind of money and all good candidates that enter politics are generally subsumed by monied interests.
