In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. A new survey shows a sizable number of Democrats ready to defect from Hillary Clinton to Donald Trump.

downloadfile.jpg

So if Donald Trump proved the political universe wrong and won the Republican presidential nomination, he would be creamed by Hillary Clinton, correct?

A new survey of likely voters might at least raise momentary dyspepsia for Democrats since it suggests why it wouldn't be a cakewalk.

The survey by Washington-based Mercury Analytics is a combination online questionnaire and "dial-test" of Trump's first big campaign ad among 916 self-proclaimed "likely voters" (this videoshows the ad and the dial test results). It took place primarily Wednesday and Thursday and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percent.

Nearly 20 percent of likely Democratic voters say they'd cross sides and vote for Trump, while a small number, or 14 percent, of Republicans claim they'd vote for Clinton. When those groups were further broken down, a far higher percentage of the crossover Democrats contend they are "100 percent sure" of switching than the Republicans.

When the firmed showed respondents the Trump ad, and assessed their responses to each moment of it, it found "the primary messages of Trump's ad resonated more than Democratic elites would hope."

About 25 percent of Democrats "agree completely" that it raises some good point, with an additional 19 percent agreeing at least "somewhat."

The people vote and the Electoral College makes the winner. the popular vote does not always win the election. If the people vote and trump is the Republican runner, I will support him without a doubt. I would rather have Rubio(hope I spelled it right) as he seems more level headed and not as reactionary and quick to jump without thinking and seeking others wisdom.

So lets all go and vote when it's your states turn!

Big donors and pundits and voters in states with large populations pick a moderate candidate and that is who wins the nomination. This has always happened, until now. No one knows what is going to happen this time because Jeb is surprisingly weak. And he brings a lot of executive experience to the table - he has proven that he wants to govern. But the base doesn't want a competent technocrat. They want someone who articulates their passions, and Jeb has little passion or charisma. So the party establishment doesn't know what to do now.

I was just about to post the yahoo news article on it when I saw you were already Johnny on the spot. I am an independent, not a democrat, but at first I was gonna vote for Hillary or Sanders over Trump because I thought he was laughable. But like most Americans, I like his stance on Muslims, and will probably vote for him and he is now winning in virtually all the poles.

The only thing I can see that might bring him down is if Vera Coking comes back to haunt him.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...finally-sells-Atlantic-City-home-530-000.html

At 91, after fighting with Trump for 30 years over her 3-story house/boarding house on the Boardwalk, and taking eminent domain all the way to the supreme court, she is finally selling her house. It's for sale now, for a cool million. dollars. (And as everyone who has ever played Monopoly knows, a house turned hotel on Boardwalk is the best property you can buy. I wish I had the money.

It should be noted that 14% of republicans also said they might jump ship for Clinton.

The big problem is that these voters tend to mostly be from red or blue states, in other words republicans in blue states and democrats from red ones. There votes don't count for much, we really need to see how many voters from the swing states are well, willing to swing.

Yes Jeb Bush was the one supported by the big money and would have best represented their moderate interests. Trump breaks the mould and appears to articulate American feelings right now. Personally I think he will wipe the floor with Clinton if he wins the nomination. He is not a candidate she can really prepare for and he will probe her weaknesses mercilessly. From an international point of view there are serious reservations about Trump though. Build a wall with Mexico and deport all Muslims will make for an interesting foreign policy if he is elected because it reeks of small minded racism. If he is elected I think America will in effect be saying we do not give 2 cents for what the rest of the world thinks we want our man on the job. However that said while Clinton may know how to play the internationalist game better I doubt whether she would be better for the world. Trump looks bad but Clinton would be worse.

This is wide open really. Trump is the most exciting candidate but some of what he says is rubbish. But please America do the world a favour and ensure the Democrats do not win a third successive term in office. Obamas social agenda and his wimpy and devious foreign policy has seriously weakened the West.

I should have said Trump is leading in all the polls except one very important one. Cruz, my favorite Tex-Mex home boy, is winning in Iowa. (He wasn't born in Texas, but he got here as fast as he could). What I predict will happen is, Trump will be the president, and Teddy will be his VP.

As an American, I still voted the last option. If he does win the election, that will be last sign I need to realize that I do not belong in this country. I'm already looking at plans to move in case it does happen.

You should probably hurry, though. If Trump wins the presidency it can only be a matter of time before every civilized country closes its borders to prevent a stream of refugees from the backwards, hateful United States. We need to protect ourselves from extremists, don't cha know. :p

On that, the public petition having risen to 572,407 signatures, The British Parliament have announced that, against normal practice*, Parliament will debate the petition to bar Mr Trump from entering the UK on 18 January 2016.

If he is barred and later becomes US president, now that could be a little awkward.

(*exclusions are not usually the business of the house itself.)

Parliament actually did address the petition and stated that while they do not support Trump's views, they cannot legally bar him from the U.K. unless he broke U.K. law or was a danger to the UK.

Yes the breakdown is important reference the electoral map. Saw an article and posted it last week in a thread that Trump is polling strong amongst Democrats in the Appalachian region and in the industrial rust belt in the north. Those are the Joe Biden type of blue collar workers. That could solidify Virginia, WV and PA. Not to mention spill over into Ohio.

The unions are holding their cards close to their chest. They know Trump is a negotiator and that helps his case with them.

Trump has said some outrageous things as you noted above. That is what a negotiator does. Come in with a bold proposal that completely breaks the model and you negotiate from strength. The Chinese and Arabs are the very best at negotiating from strength.

The usual response to a strong negotiator is a sense of shock and unkind words. But what is revealed is what they really really want. Then the strong negotiator throws them a few bones and gets most of what he or she wants.

Actually if Trump becomes president we will have more immigration. He is for single payer healthcare which will make the US more attractive to other nations.
