"Mostly, you'd protect the planet from external threats; whether you protect it from itself is up to you. You technically could leave, but since you'd still be responsible for the planet's security, you couldn't stay away for long."

"Well, I know you were thinking I'd make a good candidate, but I think it would be better placed in the rebel leader, MJ. He's even more passionate than I am. No matter how many people joined, he made it a point to always make time for those who needed it. He even knows all the rebels' names. I respect him, and I believe that the position would be better placed in his care." Alania stated

A rebel leader... to think that the appointment of Oyarsa would follow existing party lines...

Aden eyed a strange object in the sky apprehensively. The new sphere already looked somewhat like an eyeball, though it was still too far away to be sure where it was headed. "Then take me to him. I don't think that we have much time."

Alania nodded "Gladly."

She led them the way she'd come, arriving at the rebels' HQ. Alania entered through the main entrance, and immediately to her right a guard was stationed. "Hey, Demetri, can we meet with MJ? It's rather important."

"OK, Alania, but he may be busy with the aftermath of all that commotion." Demetri said.

Alania almost laughed. If only he'd known, or seen what she had. "Hey, boss, Alania's come with a group of people who are looking for you. She says its important. What do you want to do?" A moment's silence followed, then, "Alright, I'll tell her. Bye." He looked at Alania and said "He's coming down to meet you. I never understood his insistence of never doing some formalities..."

"Well, that's just the way he is. He's also more approachable that way. Makes him trustworthy." Alania said.

They didn't have to wait very long before MJ arrived. "Alania! It's good to see you in one piece!" He embraced her in a brotherly hug that embarrassed her. "I was worried after the earthquake, and then the flood..." He broke off the hug, suddenly aware he'd been ignoring her guests. "So, now, what brings you to visit us?"

"In the recent calamity, your Oyarsa was killed. Since you have no Oyarsa now, and he left no means by which a successor could appear, it falls to me to appoint one. I offered Alania the position, and she recommended you. As Oyarsa, you'd have the ability to repair the damage to the landscape, but you'd also be responsible for the planet's future safety. Do you accept this charge?"

MJ contemplated this for a couple minutes, weighing the possibility and extent of the work ahead. He took into consideration the good along with the bad, the logical thing to do. "Alright, I accept. I lead the Rebels, and now I'll have to play a role in restoring the planet to it's former glory. The Rebel members can also help ease the people into accepting that a new leader is going to be in charge, though I hate to without a majority approval..."

"It isn't uncommon for an Oyarsa to keep their existence secret, though you can decide that later. Power Request:Glundandra:Oyarsa Appointment." Aden waited a moment as a great weight filled the room, then pointed his staff at MJ. "I name you Ephestandra, the Elemental Balancer." Aden set his staff down, and the weight dissipated. "The planet will try to obey most of your commands, but you'll get the most effect if you command water, earth, fire or air to transform into one another."

Telemat watched the spectacle with mild interest. These grand appointment meetings were getting boring. He'd seen 5 last month. Telemat reached into his pocket and pulled out what appeared to be a complex map. "Travel futuristic my agent foot," he said, "Couldn't why have he me given map a tomorrow's to parties, of instead boring these coronations?" He tossed the map aside.

Yama hadn't followed Alania. Why should she? She was an elf and a loner. She would stay out and keep watch. It would never do to drop one's guard after a single battle. Looking up, Yama saw a greyish planet approaching. Nothing unusual - a different galaxy would obviously have different planets. It was coming awfully close, though. Surely it was a normal occurance. Planets didn't collide...did they? Yama had the feeling she was being watched. She stood up.

Sight and Smell were at the viewing screen. "Planet coming up," announced Smell to his invisible comrade. "Let's have a look," Sight replied. The hollow planet moved in closer. "Lens coming up on some life," announced Smell. They didn't hear someone walk up behind them. Smell was tapped on the shoulder. "Oh, Hear," he said, "We were expecting you. Are we low on any commodities?" Hear signed, "Water...intelligent slaves." "We'll make a stop then," said Sight, "The portal should open in 43 minutes."

After the ceremony was done, Alania stepped forward toward Aden with a determined look on her face. "Please... I want to go with you. I've been thinking about this since you defeated that wizard ((right?)), and I want to help you."

Aden raised an eyebrow. "Well, if you want to come... so be it, then." Aden turned and headed for the door, but Jerrick beat him outside. Aden arrived outside to find Jerrick staring up in amazement at a gigantic eyeball that filled the sky, staring down at the planet's surface. Jerrick glanced over at Aden, but Aden spoke first. "We can't do anything about it from down here. Jerrick, Iban, get moving. I'll meet out on its outer shell." Aden turned back inside. "Querrot -"

"Got it, thanks." Querrot raised his left hand, which was covered in what looked like a floral pattern.

"Alania, then. Step outside and I'll give you a lift."

Jerrick was already weaving his way toward the eyeball with a combination of a short-range teleporter cube and some sort of antigravity device. A column of flame testified that Iban was already there.

Eager to comply, Alania took Aden's offer. "I hope we meet again, MJ! Good bye!"
She was looking forward to the adventure that lay ahead. Sure there were going to be dangers, but that was all part of it.
"Be sure to take care of her, Aden. Heaven help you if I find that she's been heavily injured or died while she was with you!" MJ called after him. "And thus I wish you a safe trip."

"Bye," called Telemat, "Bye!" He started to walk outside with the others, then decided not to bother and popped outside. Something was nearing the planet. An eye? He looked at it again. This wasn't an eye. For one thing, it was too big. For another, there was no optic nerve. What was the fun of an eye with no optic nerve? Maye there was one on the other side. Without a word, Telemat popped away.

The three Senses watched the screen. Slowly, a circular darness began to cover it from the side. "Opening," announced Sight. "Humanoid in line," remarked Smell, "Release catch." Hear slowly pulled a lever.

Yama looked around her. She saw the others coming out of a building in the distance. She saw water where there should have been sand. She heard something above her. Looking up, she saw that the planet was still coming closer. It was close enough to shoot! Beginning to turn, though...it wouldn't collide.

Yama remembered something...things are attracted to the planet. Even birds must come down eventually. Why weren't these two planets hitting each other? Did the rule not apply to planets? She studied the planet coming nearer. Some sort of circle was on its outside...and it appeard to be phasing like the moon, but quicker. Yama notched an arrow.

Suddenly, something shot out of the dark part of the moon! Yama loosed her arrow, which cut through it but didn't slow its progress. Whatever it was, it was heading for her! Yama hastily looked around for a tree. Trees were safe whenever one was being chased. There were none nearby. This planet had been a desert less than two hours ago.

Yama ran. She was scooped up from behind in a mechanical net and lifted into the planet! "Ay kirna mi," she shouted, trying to reach the dagger in her boot. Her bow was useless in this situation. She couldn't reach; her right leg had gone through the tear her arrow had made in the net. She was trapped.

Aden grabbed Alania around the waist. "Angel's Feet!" He and Alania abruptly shot into the sky, jumping directly to the surface of the Eye.

Behind them, Querrot took a few steps away from the building and cast his spell. He burst into the sky as though shot from a cannon, hovered in the air for a moment, then fell toward the eye, caught in its gravitational field - and seemingly ignoring the gravity of the planet that he had just left.

Act V: Into the Eye

The World:
Its inhabitants call it "The Eye" and live inside the planet, which is an inside-out sphere. The inhabitants live in the planet's inner shell. Its outer shell randomly slides along the inner shell. Both shells have a large hole. When the outer shell's hole moves over the inner shell's hole, the planet is accessible. At other times the inhabitants are able to see through the outer hole. The planet is able to be piloted by its leaders, though they are unable to turn it in any way. Since the planet can be piloted from within, it is more like a spaceship than a planet in that it does not orbit any particular star.

The Empire:
The Eye is ruled by the Senses, a group of five individuals who are each undetectable by a different one of the five senses. As it happens, each security device on the planet only uses one of the five senses, so the Senses are able to infiltrate anywhere - and maintain control of the planet.

Aden managed to land on the Eye feet-first, but wasn't able to slow himself down in time, and so hit the ground rather hard. After taking a moment to recover, he set down Alania and looked around. Jerrick was now within a few yards of the surface and coming in for a landing; Querrot was still falling, but would hit momentarily. Iban was hovering motionless a few yards away.

Aden scanned the surroundings a bit further, giving Querrot time to land. As soon as the sounds of Querrot's impact had faded, Aden headed resolutely toward the only discernible entrance: the still-widening "pupil" of the eye. "Through that hole!" Aden shouted, just before jumping off the edge.

With a burst of flames, Iban leapt through the hole ahead of Aden. Aden dropped through next, and Querrot began lumbering toward it. Jerrick looked at the ground speculatively, then teleported straight down.

Inside the small planet at the core of the eye, two figures sat, imprisoned. The one was a tall figure sitting with his eyes closed. A passive observer might thing he was asleep. But the other figure, a short girl hunched over a desk, busily writing on a type of parchment paper, knew he was looking. He was always looking, not at her, necessarily, but looking at everything. He tried to explain it once, but she was not certain she understood. He apparently could see everything within his scope, but he could turn his focus, like eyes, on certain things, while everything else remained in his peripheral, as it were.
Either way, she was too busy with her studies to give his looking more than a second thought. The spell she was working on required some thought; it was a protection spell, but it was design to protect from everything. It was a potential theory, but she would see if it would work. Many of her theories did not, and her master would take her work, rework it, and make it work. That was the beauty of seeing everything.
He smiled, but she did not see. "Hurry now, Genevra. We will be leaving soon."
Genevra gave him little thought, "Master Phyn, we have been here for many weeks. Why now; we could have left at any time? Can we wait until I have finished this scroll?"
"We cannot, apprentice. Events are coming to fruition. It is for these events that we are here. Thus, we cannot wait."
He stood, an iridescent cloud floating above and around his head. The uninformed would marvel at the beauty, but the knowing would marvel more, for the cloud was thousands of spells. Spells concentrated into tiny spheres, "motes," Phyn called them. Thousands upon tens of thousands of spells, sealed, but ready to use at a moments notice.
"Come, Genevra. It is time to go." He brought a tiny dot, a grey speck of light, and sent it into the device of their confinement. A simple opening spell, but it would work on almost any lock: magical, electrical, or mechanical. The barrier that confined them phased out of existence.
Genevra placed a temporary seal on her spell, gathered up her scrolls, her books, and her inks. "I wish you had given me more notice, Master Phyn," she said, scrambling to pack up her belongings.
Soon, the two were among the regular population of the mobile planet. Genevra was a little worried; Master Phyn was not exactly difficult to spot. And if there were guards about, they would see him in any crowd. Just follow the glowing cloud floating above the masses, and there they would be.
Still they walked, Master Phyn making purposeful strides in a particular direction. His eyes were still closed, but he knew where to go.

Telemat looked around. No optic nerve. Bummer. What kind of space eye was this? Just some sort of boring rock. Telemat kicked the ground. It was the same all over. Except...there had been an eyeris on the other side, hadn't there? Or something at least. Maybe that would be more interesting. Telemat popped.

Smell smiled. They had a new slave to work the core. The general population lived just inside the shell. Mining, polishing, and tightening at the core was grunt work for captives. "What sector is low on workers?" he asked his comrades.

Touch ran through the control panel and through Hear. "Sorry to burst in like this," he apologised, "but I've just received word that two of the slaves are missing."

Smell frowned. He hadn't expected this sort of answer to his question. "Well, we'll send the newcomer as a temporary replacement until they're found."

"Who escaped?" asked Sight. "The weird old guy and the strange girl," replied Touch. Smell frowned again.

Yama felt as if she has been swallowed by a planet. She knew things were attracted to the planet because that is where they came from and that was where they would go. Had she gone back? That didn't make sense; this wasn't her home. Why was only she taken? What about the rocks that had been beside her? Perhaps this planet was a picky eater.

Someone came toward her. Yama tensed. "Follow me," said a figure in the dim light. Yama slowly stood and got out of the net. Was this a spirit? She followed.

Aden landed with a loud thud on a crust of hard-packed dirt, covering who-knows-what. Glancing around, he saw a single corridor leading off to the side, and Iban already heading down it. Pausing only to give the command "Earth's Fury" to his staff, Aden headed after him.

After traveling about forty feet down the corridor, Iban came to a strange spinning device that covered the entire corridor, spinning anything that passed through. He paused momentarily, considering whether to destroy it, then decided against it and simply flew through the center. As he passed through it, the device flipped him upside-down, which had no significant effect on his flight pattern.

After teleporting through three feet of solid steel, Jerrick found himself falling, with miles of empty space beneath him. Looking up, he could see houses and streets, along with some green that was probably plants, quite clearly upside-down against the surface of the eye. He considered for a moment forcing his way back to the surface, but he realized that he had just circumvented somthing about how the planet was supposed to work, and he decided to let this play out. Catching the enemy off-guard couldn't possibly be a bad thing.

Alania managed to somewhat land on her feet, ending up in a kneeling position. Standing up, she looked around. This planet seemed to work sort of like an eye, turning things upside down before righting to normal again. Since this was her first planet she was visiting, she decided to stick close to Aden. He was more experienced than her and had at least a better understanding of what to expect. So, she followed him down the corridor, staying close.

((Sorry for the long wait, guys, really.))

As the two walked further into the labyrinthine corridors of the metallic planet, no one bothered to stop them. It seemed that Phyn Yinshazael was avoiding the guards in a way no one else could; through sheer potentiality. Genevra often wondered if her master could see into the future, although he denied that he could. If he could not, as he claimed, then he must be able to see everything that could potentially happen. His "prophecies," as she took to calling them, were always right. If he said, "Looks like rain," under a clear blue sky, you carried an umbrella.
He would take erratic paths, double back, and sometimes just stand still. Genevra knew he was watching the guards, and that he was avoiding them by watching where they were going. Whether this extended into the future or not, she did not know, but it was working.
Eventually, he stopped this tactic and began walking in a more purposed, straighter manner. Genevra winced when she saw guards up ahead, and winced more when they cried, "Halt." Phyn did so, and waited until they came closer. "This area is restricted access," one of the guards said, "Turn around at once."
"You can try to stop us," Pyhn said, "but we will go through here." Genevra knew that this was not a threat, but a statement of fact. They would try to stop them, but she knew that they would fail.
They brandished their weapons. "We will shoot if you don't holy mother!"
While they were speaking, Phyn had selected a red mote. It fell beside him like a miniature meteor, a blazing red tail streaking behind it until it crashed into the ground. When it did, a flower of fire blossomed rapidly upward, and curled itself into a shape. The shape was that of a large lizard, sort of like a komodo dragon. It flickered out a tongue of red fire, bellowed a roar, and gave a snort of fire.
The guards backed away as Phyn placed a hand over the magical beast. "If you wish to run," he said calmly, "Now is the time to do so."
One of the guards took his offer and deserted his post, running down the corridor for the nearest exit. The others took their weapons and prepared to fire.
The fiery lizard heaved a blast of fire in their faces. It did not hurt them much, but their weapons were melted at the tips, rendering their weapons useless. Their hands were burned slightly.
Genevra had opened her spell book and selected a piece of paper from it. She waved her hand over the page, breaking the sealed spell contained in the parchment. A white glow appeared in her hand. This she pointed at three of the guards in turn, and each guard topped over, unable to move. The remaining two guards had seen enough. They turned to run, and as they did, the fiery lizard blew a puff of flames that lit their pants. They bolted down the hall a short ways, yelping in pain, before finally dropping to the ground and rolling to douse the flames.
"This is merely a sample," Phyn said calmly, "I possess much stronger powers at my disposal. Let this be a warning to your other men at arms."
Phyn continued to walk down the hall, the flaming beast walking at his side. Genevra reclasped her book and followed after him. "Where are we going, sir?" she asked, being wary of the fire beast.
"Not much farther, Genevra; he is coming along rapidly. We should meet him soon. By the way, you need not be afraid of it; the fire will not burn you. It has protection spells to keep the flames in that particular shape, and those prevent it from burning anything or anyone I wish to keep safe."
"A little showy," Genevra said jealously. Giving magical spells a shape was always tricky, since it took a lot of work to get it right, and took a lot of practice to keep the shape in place. It was not something any magician would do on the fly; they would just shoot fire. It was not worth it to them. But Phyn could manage it, since all of his spells were prepare ahead of time. Like her own spells in her scrolls, but she could never get the hang of giving magic a shape.
Phyn noted her comment. "It will come in time, Genevra. You will learn to do it too, as you progress in your skill."
"Was it really necessary?"
"Perhaps not, but it is the psychological effect that makes it worth the extra effort. If you mere cast fire at someone, or even if you create a pillar of fire that can throw fire on its own, it is not as impressive to the onlooker as 'summoning' a fire-breathing salamander."
She nodded. They walked on a little ways before something else happened.
