It is said just before the oratio, or prayer, in all the Canonical Hours in the triduum of Holy Week, except the Vespers and Compline of Holy Saturday. As it is also the fourth in order of the seven penitential psalms (q.v.), its times of recitation will be governed by the appropriate rubric in the Breviary.

Wow... the things New Advent has in it. :)

I had no idea that was there. Good find.

So we are looking at Matins, Lauds, Terce, Sext, None, Vespers and Compline?

You're missing an Hour. However, since Matins and Lauds are always combined, except for one day a year (which you might as well look for, because I just decided that's the next question ;)) your total remains correct.

So we're up to 19 and trying to work out the penitential psalms bit

The Seven Penitential Psalms are not part of the Office, although they are found in the back of the Breviary.

Note, too, that I said "Holy Week", not "the Triduum".

It looks like the New Advent article is describing the pre-1911 rubrics, but for this question, there doesn't seem to be any differences.

You're also missing some other times when it's said during the Triduum.

Was I missing Vigil? Because you've already taught me that prime no longer exists

Since when I said "Office" in the original question, I meant the pre-Vatican II Office, Prime's still there. For those who use the old Breviary, such as the FSSP, they still say Prime.

In the new Liturgia Horarum, Prime's gone, and what was formerly called Matins is now the Office of Readings.

"Vigil" is an older term for Matins, or for one of the nocturns.

Christmas Day!!

Correct.

Following Matins on Christmas Day, the first Mass at Midnight is said, then Lauds, the second Mass at Dawn, Prime, the third Mass during the Day, and then Terce. Sext, None, Vespers, and Compline are said as usual.

This is the only day when Matins and Lauds may be separated in choir, although in private recitation, they may be at any time, or the three nocturns may also be separated.

I sometimes anticipate the first and second nocturn, and say the third nocturn and Lauds together after midnight or when I wake up.

It is the psalm chosen for the preces feriales at Vespers for all the weekdays in Lent with the exception of the triduum of Holy Week, for those in Advent, for the ember-days except those of the Pentecostal season, and for all vigils, except those of Christmas, Epiphany, the Ascension, and Pentecost. In addition it is said just before the oratio, or prayer, in all the Canonical Hours in the triduum of Holy Week, except the Vespers and Compline of Holy Saturday. As it is also the fourth in order of the seven penitential psalms (q.v.), its times of recitation will be governed by the appropriate rubric in the Breviary. It (or, as alternative, Ps. cxvi, "Laudate . . . omnes") is said daily in the prayers after dinner (post prandium), except on days when only one meal is taken (in which case the prayers are those styled post caenam, "after supper") and also except the times from Christmas to the Octave of the Epiphany, from Holy Saturday until Low Sunday exclusively, and from Ascension Thursday to the Octave of Pentecost exclusively. It is very prominent in the ceremony of the Asperges, during which the choir sings the antiphon "Asperges me, Domine, hyssopo", etc. (i.e. Ps. 1, verse 8; Vulg., 9), then the verse "Miserere mei, Deus", etc. (i.e. Ps. 1, 1; Vulg., 3), then the Gloria Patri, and finally the antiphon "Asperges me", the celebrant meanwhile reciting, either alone or alternately with the sacred ministers, the entire Miserere. On Passion and Palm Sundays the Gloria Patri is omitted, and during Paschal Time the antiphon and psalm are "Vidi aquam" and "Confitemini" (Ps. cxvii) respectively.

Hmmmm... we had nineteen between Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday, then we added two more for Lauds on Holy Monday and Spy Wednesday, and if I read the above correctly, I need to add another 3 for Vespers on Holy Monday, Holy Tuesday and Spy Wednesday? Bringing up a total of 24?

Psalm 50 is never said at Vespers, other than twice during the Triduum.

You're right about Lauds on Monday and Wednesday. Keep going with that. :)

You did find the Ordo, so look at which psalms are said. And you missed a bit from New Advent just before what you just posted.

So what did that 1st line I copied before mean?

It means that the Breviary was revised in 1911, and the ferial preces no longer contain psalms (although many of the prayers are verses from psalms).

Lauds on Holy Tuesday is also correct, along with Lauds on Holy Monday and Spy Wednesday.

Take another look at the Ordo for this week and see what's at Lauds.
