It was a startle to me when I heard the truth years ago.

Many times things are handed down by tradition, then you read
and research, and it was there the whole time. The answer to your post
and question.

May others study the Gospels for this question.

That is what is held to 6th century tradition.

These names apparently derive from a Greek manuscript probably composed in Alexandria around 500, and which has been translated into Latin with the title Excerpta Latina Barbari

Scripture is silent, and when Scripture is silent it is not a matter of Salvation (2Tm 3:16) Surely it would be of more use to be looking for things that Scripture is not silent on that people blatantly contradict in their praxis and doxis than this?

Well, sir, I'm looking for an answer from scripture.

And as shown, what you stated is tradition that dates back to AD 500.

Nowhere in the scriptures does it state "3".

I'm just saying prove it to me.

Matthew 2:11 says there were only three gifts, not that there were only three wise men. Tradition says it was three and gives the names, but the scriptures are silent. If you read Matthew 2:11 correctly it says that the wise men visited Jesus at a house, not a stable. But here are the facts we do know about the wise men:
The wise men were guided to look for the King of the Jews by a miraculous stellar event, the "Star of Bethlehem," which they called "His star" (Matthew 2:2). They consulted with King Herod in Jerusalem concerning the birth of Christ and were so directed to Bethlehem (Matthew 2:4-8). They followed God's guidance joyfully (Matthew 2:10). Their gifts for Jesus were costly, and they worshiped Him. God warned them in a dream against returning to Herod, so, in defiance of the king, they left Judea by another route (Matthew 2:12). So, the magi were men who 1) read and believed God's Word, 2) sought Jesus, 3) recognized the worth of Christ, 4) humbled themselves to worship Jesus, and 5) obeyed God rather than man. They were truly wise men!

A simple question, with what I thought was a simple answer.

Scriptures don't say. Tradition dictates that you or everybody else put out 3 magi, fine, God Bless You.

"Tradition" also dictates that Peter was "the rock". Why not accept that too?

And here I was thinking Dwayne Johnson was the "Rock".

You got to realize when ever you do a good thing, or are trying to turn people to God, you will be met with anger from some people. You know why this is, The enemy loves for us to fight each other.

You made a good point, i can't find 3 any where, maybe it is the 3 gifts i think points to the answer because a wise man would not have shown up empty handed while others had gifts. Just my thought that they each had a gift. Also 3 is a Holy number.

And, interestingly, there were ZERO "wisemen" at the savior's birth. Not one.

And they never came to the stable. In fact, it was probably easily at least a year or more after He was born that they finally got to Joseph's house.

Of course their could have been three since their were three gifts. The symbolism of the three and the manger with the shepards makes for nice biblical art.
