Trinity not specifically in scripture?

I have heard it argued many times that the Trinity is not spelled out specifically in scripture....


Tonight while I was reading, I came across this....

1 John 5:7 ~ For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

That seemed pretty spelled out to me... does it need to be more specific?

Most people who oppose you would argue that that was a forgery; it's not contained in most early manuscripts... most translations omit it.

I would generally say that the Trinity is not spelled out clearly in the Scriptures; it was instead experienced in the life of the Church through careful reading of the Scriptures and in communion with God Himself... it's part of the internal experience of the Church and can't be understood *just* with the Bible separated from the life of the Church. In my opinion, anyway.

Here are some useful passages from the Holy Bible (Old Testament)

Genesis 1:26

"Then God said, Let us make man in our image..."

Genesis 3:22

"Then the Lord God said, Behold, the man has become like one of us..."

Genesis 11:7

"Come, let us go down and there confuse their language..."

Here is a very strong reference to the Trinity in the Old Testament as well.

Isaiah 6:3

"...Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord of Hosts..."


This is mind blowing because it comes from the Old Testament!

Forgive me...

I've argued with Jehovah's Witnesses who say that 1 John 5:7 is an interpolation, as Marjorie remarked, not found in the earliest manuscripts.

Personally, I don't think that is a good argument. The verse is quoted by the Fathers and was in the maunscripts used by St. Jerome.

Nevertheless, the biblical argument for the Trinity doesn't turn on any single verse. There are plenty of others.

The Scripture is pretty clear that the Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is God, that the three are not the same Person, yet God is one.

Sounds like the Trinity to me.

Firstly I'd like to say that even Judaism is aware that the word Jehovah was an english misspelling and understanding of the four letters used to identify God.

Secondly, who are they to say anything against the Trinity, especially when they confuse ArchAngel Michael with Jesus!

It is important to remeber that the "Trinity" as defined by the Church of Christ is the true God. Those who would say that Jews and Muslims share the same God are missing this point. It is the revelation given to the Church by the Holy Spirit. It is in scripture, as all truth is, but the Church has given the world this revelation. Any one that claims that God is not triune is either pagan, anti-Christ, or ignorant.

Not some who calculate time and after getting it wrong so many times, still can not figure out that no-one knows but the Most Holy Trinity!

These days devil is hitting me with different things! Nevertheless, devil will always find something to keep you away from God... thats why a lot of prayer and fasting helps...

Put a cross somewhere near your front door or on it. A cross that has been blessed by an Orthodox priest is especially effective.

It will turn away JWs and Mormons.

I would agree, but sadly this "definition" of the true God has become more obscure in recent times. The implications of not accepting the revelation as given by Christ himself concerning who God is has led to much confusion. We see this not only with JW's, but with new age practices creeping into Christianity.

It's not about a contest, and I do have a background in Hebrew so I know what you mean, but it's about not driving people away by our condescension.

I do understand that prayer is probably more effective though.
