  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I miss writing on real paper. The reason is that it's so much easier to work with a computer; it's faster, easier to edit, proofreads, and all the resources you can imagine... all in one same place. When I used to write on real paper, I had to take it all to my PC, and then I continued writing in my PC. So when I had to go back to work on real paper, I was missing the part I had on my computer. :S

i carry around 2 notebooks, 1 for everything, and the other for a specific story

Me too :D But I do most of my writing on my laptop (just got a new one  after slaving away all summer in a kitchen :p. It is extremely awesome ) because of the editing features and stuff.

computer has lots of advantages for me... 1. It can be edited quicker 2. You can have 1 slim laptop rather than binders of paper 3. It won't get blown away in the wind 4. In the time i typed this i would have only writen up to 1.

I'm a Pen And Paper person.

Computers convince me to 'edit as I go', which is something that I struggle with - once I begin editing as I go, I get caught up on one paragraph and can spend so long figuring out all of the little nuances of that one paragraph that I end up losing the overall flow of what I was going to write.

I also don't like the unreliability of technology, and often when I stop writing I have to stop in a hurry - it's quicker to shut a notebook than it is to save a document and then back it up externally.

Have a pen in my hand and paper under my wrist also inspires ideas. Inspiration pours out of everything around me when I'm faced with good ol' fashioned pen and paper, but when I'm in front of a computer I focus so intently that nothing flows and nothing inspires.

Computers cramp my style.

I prefer to do initial drafts on the computer, but sometimes I write by hand during class. I don't like to though....it's incredibly tedious to copy to the computer and much more difficult to share with friends. I do a lot of editing by hand though; there are some things that you just don't catch on the screen.

I can agree. However, I still beleive that paper is just as powerful a medium as a computer.

For me all I need is the notion of writing something. I tend to use whatever is around me. However, I consider paper just as useful as a computer. To much reliance on technology is a bad thing. On the other side of the coin though. I can use a computer faster than I can write on paper. Both are valuable mediums in my opinion. For long stories and books I tend to use a computer. For poems, character design, notes, and shorter things, I use paper. I tend to flow when using either one.

As often as possible, I write on both types of "paper". There are several reasons for this:

One: I don't have a portable computer, so when I get an idea (such as at my Writers' Group), I am essentially forced to put it on paper.

Two: Putting things on "virtual paper" aids the presentation, especially if I'm sending my work to a publisher. Believe it or not, publishers constantly receive work written by hand, and many will throw it out right off the bat, because they don't want to deal with the headache of having to go through something handwritten.

Three: Having something on real paper (especially with ink) will help if any copyright issues arise. I have had my intellectual property stolen from me, and it is a sickening feeling to see something you've written published under someone else's name. However, because I didn't have anything to prove I wrote the piece, the credit still goes to that fiend.

Now, even if I'm just writing notes for my character or plot, I sign and date it in ink. If possible, I show my friends and family, both to get ideas and so they can verify that they've seen me with the notes on that actual date. Then, I "pretty it up" for viritual presentation, but I always keep the real paper copies just in case.

I prefer to write on my computer, for one thing I do a lot of research as I write and I bought my netbook specifically for ease of travel with it for writing. I would have gone for a bigger and more powerful laptop otherwise.

I do, however, do some work on paper. Every large project (Novel, Screenplay, play, or large fanfiction project) get it's own notebook. I try to buy interesting looking ones in bulk when I see them on sale. My current screenplay has notes, dialog bits, research, character pages, "Novel" type descriptions of places all written through out a hardback notebook with a japanese woodblock print on the front and back.

I like doing research and pre-writing on paper, it lets me jot down notes where ever I may be and it seems more...permanent when I do research and note-taking that way. Years of AP classes and writing without a computer have sort of ingrained those habits in me.

I held off for so long; I enjoy writing on paper. Yet, I now rarely touch a physical piece of paper. Even the books I buy are often for my Kindle. It makes editing easier (though I have disabled spellcheck so I don't become dumb). A few weeks ago, I was taking notes at work on a piece of paper and my fingers got tired quickly. I do like to jot down a quick note or two when I am away from the computer though.

I write on paper for the first draft, [and first draft only]. (Double spaced) And then make obvious correctons, write out insertions, etc. So much more freedom and ease of revising.
It is nice to be able to lay out a few pages all together. Gives you an easier overview of the flow.

The I put it on the word processor and go from there, writing out on paper any MAJOR revisions.

I hand write the first draft. Then edit as I go when typing it into the computer. I print it out and edit it again using a red pen and type it up one last time.

Then I send it to my beta readers and possibly do another edit or two depending on what they say.

I wrote years ago and it was like dictating the story. I would think of the scene then begin to write it on paper, then move on to next scene,
Some reason when I type it flows, my hands keep up with my thoughts, for the most part. It is so much easier to edit, plus spell check, although Word seems to say things wrong at times, and wants me to capitalize the first word of a line(not the sentence).
But once I ignore the faulty error highlights, I can reread the paragraph and see it could flow better. Make sure characters aren't in one spot here, and in another just a few lines later, or the character left his staff in his room, and next paragraph he is smacking someone with it.

I hated to edit with paper. Line through and write above it.(I never wrote leaving a line in between.)
