Or... The Hellenistic influence was Luke's own -- not Jesus'.

Considering that Luke was a Hellenized author writing to a Hellenized audience, I'm going to go with the far more likely scenario...

You mean Latin, not "Roman." And which sort of people was he in contact with? The upwardly mobile, cosmopolitan, intellectual crowd? Or the dregs, castoffs, malcontents, and outcasts?

As I said... wishful thinking.

It's not wishful thinking. And it was Jesus' Hellenistic influence: we don't know how many (cosmopolitan) people Jesus in fact was in contact with. The Gospels just aren't telling much/anything about that aspect we're interested in. We learn that Cornelius was ''the first'' Roman convert, but, again, in the Bible it is not implicitly said that he was indeed the first Roman convert...

Indeed -- we don't know how many educated, intellectual, cosmopolitan types a day laborer turned homeless itinerant street preacher would get chummy with -- so you're free to make up as many as you need.

Well, He, Jesus, said the famous Confucius' saying 'do unto others what you would like them do unto you'. Who knows how many intellectual people Jesus met while on His road (especially while in the desert for 40 days, if we don't take His solitude literaly).

As did a lot of people -- but we've already established that the stories weren't very original.

Why take the desert literally at all?

Geniuses think alike, what can I say?...

And why should the ''stories'' be original? It's enough that His parables are original / timeless...

Because it's written that someone tended to Jesus for a long time (the period of 40 days fits perfectly here). And tending generally happens in a certain place, doesn't it...

Also, we take the desert literally because it's a barren place where itinerary, intellectual people would meet and talk about such and such things.

Everything in the Bible isn't open to personal interpretation.

Something with substance -- I'm no fan of soundbyte theology.

"tending"? What are you going on about?

No, the places you're thinking of are called "cities." Deserts are among the places people try to avoid unless absolutely necessary.

Come on, you know what I meant by saying that...

Consider all the stuff you've been saying these past days, I have no reason to assume the sensible option of interpreting your statements.

After all, you also implied science to be some kind of moral agent. Why would your statements about technology be any different?

No, I'm not. By tending I meant that angels were providing livelihood to Christ.
I am going to use this chance and ask you do you believe in angels. Before you answer to this one, I shall also ask you if you have ever read Plato and his influence on Aristotle and Western thought? Plato's ideas are compared to angels.

Are you implying that there was no cosmopolitism before cities? Cities have sprung out of the deserts... That's why people in search for the deeper meaning of the cosmopolitism were going to the deserts to think things through... Afterwards, they would come back to teach the cosmopolitan guys the drawbacks of the cosmopolitism... Take John the Baptist for example... (Not to mention that there are a bunch of places built in the deserts where people have chosen to live, and discuss Plato and Aristotle, among other things.)

Were they now? In which case, going out to the desert was more an vacation than even an inconvenience.

Do you think that if Jesus had fallen down, the angels would've picked him up and dusted him off?

No, I do not, and yes, I have.

Would you prefer me to say it?

Cities have sprung out of the deserts...

And for good reason.

That's why people in search for the deeper meaning of the cosmopolitism were going to the deserts to think things through...

Did they go alone or in large groups? Think before you answer.

Afterwards, they would come back to teach the cosmopolitan guys the drawbacks of the cosmopolitism... Take John the Baptist for example... (Not to mention that there are a bunch of places built in the deserts where people have chosen to live, and discuss Plato and Aristotle, among other things.)

Such places served many purposes.... they're called "cities."

Going to the desert was much more than a vacation, He had to face His demons as both a man and a God. Get it?

The angels were there to signify the omnipresence of the Father.

Are you avoiding to tell more about Plato, ideas and angels?

For which good reason did the cities spring out in the deserts?

I will let you answer that yourself...

No, such places are called 'monasteries' i.e. monastic settlements. Now too, people of intellectuality are joining the monasteries (Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox...) to talk about Plato and Aristotel, among other things... There were much more inhabitants in the monasteries before, so they seemed to be cities...

Of course I implied that. Science and technology must conform to the bettering of moral virtues of people. (Unless you too think that we are 'frozen nothing':))

Which would be no sweat when you've got angels waiting on you hand and foot. Get it?

The angels were there to signify the omnipresence of the Father.

Were they now? Because the Bible says so, or because you do?

Are you avoiding to tell more about Plato, ideas and angels?

No, I'm merely dismissing metaphors in favor of discussing realities.

For which good reason did the cities spring out in the deserts?

Their proximity to water is a good sign.

I will let you answer that yourself...

And of course, when people talk about deserts, their first thoughts are "this here's a good place to build a monastery..."
