Not sure there is a person-who-we-will-be on whos behalf we do anything. Where is he?
I think its more like we are building this person as we go along with the choices we make.
I agree that we are building this person as we go along with the choices we make. And, also, I am different than say, ten or twenty years ago. My preferences have changed, not completely, but in some ways significantly. Would I want my twenty-seven year old self, knowing what he thought he knew then but definitely didn't know, deciding for me right now? No. And yet, that is what happened.
Again, I think one of the main points she is trying to make is that when it comes to these life forming choices, we don't have access to the rational approach we may think we do. We have to take risks and enter unknown territory. Factor on top of what we don't know in regards to other people and how they will affect our choices, and it looks like taking acts of faith is not only unavoidable, but part and parcel of life. This idea that we go forward rationally picking and choosing is in a significant sense an illusion.
