  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Actually, the gospels do mention blessing the bread before breaking it, but it is interesting how some say "He blessed it", while others say "after giving thanks". That tells me you can do either.

They mention Christ blessing the bread, but not the disciples.

The "he" would be Jesus. He's God, he can.

...but if you don't believe someone can bless them in the first place...it is really not necessary. And if someone wants to give proof that his disciples blessed people/food...well, as a follower, we are all disciples of God. Does your mom bless your beads? What about a friend at work during morning break? Surely they can, too, right?

The only time I went searching for information on another religion was b/c I needed to witness to a Mormon and needed their fiction against God's truth. I could do all that on the internet or in the library. Would I touch The Book of Mormon? Not with a ten foot pole. Would I set foot in a Mormon church. I don't think so.

How one can spiritually "experience" anythingthey do not believe in/oppose? They can't. It would be just the same as me acting like a priest acting like I was blessing something for him...if the heart is not in it, and just the mind is...it is nothing more than a documentary.

That's funny--completely stealth in mine!!

Well, not all of the time--sometimes visible and sometimes stealth.

I can see everyone else fine. The reason I first noticed it was that there was one visible person listed and comma then a completely blank long space another comma and then another visible person. I got curious as to what was in the blank space and there sho nuff was...therese.

Well, either it should be visible all of the time and isn't working or her stealth mode has blown a gasket.

What are you talking about "stealth mode." I dont think CF has this feature enabled.

Anyways, I am thinking about going to mass tommorow. They are interesting plus I really enjoy the music. We'll see.

What can I say...I'm not making this stuff up.

I've watched the local rc on tv. Didn't find it interesting at all and the music wasn't good either. Now some of those altars they sometimes prepare with all of that food on it got my attention. I might be willing to go down and help them munch even if they do sit it in front of a statue. ----- OK, don't think I would really go! Don't really know if they allow anyone to munch it anyway.

so what then, if anything, does blessing his beads do?

Lambslove,

I realize this was truly never answered...it is a man made tradition that is in no way whatsoever biblical...bwing blessed by mere man does nothing that God could not do Himself....IF He wanted us all to have them...which He doesn't since it is not biblical. It is just another tradition.

there is still confusion here about the blessing of the rosary. It is not asked what it is like to have it blessed or what it does to have it blessed...It's more along of the lines of....."what can mere man alone do or say to have something changed- a rosary- to make it more useful to the one who owns it"...kinda like...."is the rosary useless otherwise"

However, my question is this...and it is an honest one....Why would one choose to hold onto so many man made traditions in regards to their spiritual/church lives that are not instructed by God himself? Where is the conviction? Where is the knowledge of the Bible?

When it comes down to it, all along this thread we have debated the catholic faith and the stronghold of catholics to the traditions that men took it upon themselves to insert into this faith from the beginning. It is not a me vs.you issue.. It is not a Baptist vs Catholic issue .It is more like where are the scriptures that have led these individuals to practice their faith such as they do? God has not instructed them to through His word...they can be found no where in scripture....why do you do them if God has not said? Often "up bringing", "tradition", and "routine" are what keep people from finding TRUE instructionfrom God for their lives.

IF a man were alone in a country with a Bible...on His own with the word of God only to rely on... would he make a necklace to pray with? Would he pray to the dead other than Jesus Christ for instruction? Would he praise the dead other than the living Jesus CHrist? There would be no one to bless his beads... There would be no confession to mere man...

Because he was not instructed to do so.

This is the point.

I think i found your answer, don't know what it means exacterly but.............

'When you get a new Rosary, you should have it blessed (if a priest is available). The Popes have loved the Rosary very much. So they gave priests power to bless the Rosary, and when they do, each bead carries with it an Indulgence. This Indulgence is the remission of the temporal punishment we must suffer for our sins either on earth or in Purgatory. There are various kinds of Rosary blessings and each has a different kind of Indulgence. One blessing is called the Dominican, for the great Saint Dominic who received the Rosary from Mary. Another is called the Apostolic. This is the blessing of the Pope. Another is called the Crosier, which makes us think of the cross on the Rosary'

Thank you so much! That's all I wanted to know!

St. Dominic prayed to Our Lady that she would force the devils, who possessed a man, to reveal the truth about devotion to her. The devils were forced by Our Lady to reveal: "Now that we are forced to speak we must also tell you this: Nobody who perseveres in saying the Rosary will be damned, because she obtains for her servants the grace of true contrition for their sins and by means of this they obtain God’s forgiveness and mercy."

............so there ya have it, right out of the mouth of a devil.

Sheesh. I'll probably get in trouble for saying this but, why on earth would anyone base any doctrine or tradition on anything uttered by the demons??

Is there a Book, Chapter and Verse to substantiate this?
Mostly the
"Indulgence is the remission of the temporal punishment "
and
"temporal punishment we must suffer for our sins either on earth or in Purgatory"
and
"Purgatory"
and
"There are various kinds of Rosary blessings and each has a different kind of Indulgence"

Just wondering ...
