Hey, I usually listen to Christian music only now but I used to listen to anything. I just wanted to see if any of you all had experienced some of the same things as me with certain secular music. I remember the first time that I heard the band Tool. It was like the music was drawing me in and there was nothing I could do about it. I know that sounds weird if you've never experienced that but looking back it was very demonic. I also kind of felt that way with some Live songs from Throwing Copper and Secret Samadhi, and some Bright Eyes songs. I would just encourage anyone who still listens to mostly secular to be very careful. Music does affect you even if you think you just like it for the music and not the words. I didn't want to accept it at the time, but a Christian really has no excuse for listening to some of the stuff that's out there. Please just really take a good look at the music your listening to and decide whether it's glorifying God or not. I had to get rid of a lot of my CDs but now I wouldn't trade that for the world.

i know where you're coming from. i love tool. Lateralus is a pretty clean album, but their older stuff is kind of messed up. Alot of the lyrics are really really intense. it's wierd, i get that feeling with tool also, but i really don't listen to their other stuff that much, so i haven't really felt convicted to throw my cd's away.

but i understand where you're coming from. they do kind of suck you in. when i start listening to tool, i have to listen to more, it just puts me in the mood where all i want to hear is tool. Danney carey is one of the best drummers i've ever heard, but he said that he sets up his drums so that different powers and energies can help him play. that's kind of freaky.

Lateralus is an amazing album as far as talent goes but just realize that he's singing about hinduism and buddhism even though he doesn't say it. I do love 3 Libras though. Just be careful. Some of the worst lyrics have nothing to do with filthy language.

When I discover a new artist I really like, I get that whole drawn-in feeling. I listened to Three Doors Down's Away from the Sun like every day for nearly a year. It was the only CD in my car for months. I don't think it was anything demonic, I think it was a deal where I really connected with that sound.

Now I'm stuck on Toby Keith.

What's wrong with singing about hinduism and buddhism? I don't look to Maynard for spiritual advice, and I realize that he's not a christian.

Beautiful song. Do you mind expounding? :) Also, what makes language filthy?

i would agree with most of the posts here. on one hand, i don't look to maynard for spiritual guidance, but on the other hand, i still have a hard time listening to him scream "maybe i should play god and shoot you in your f***ing head!"

I think filthy language is anything that is offensive to God. Some words and phrases are pretty obvious and then some have to do with your conscience. I don't see anything wrong with saying **** but some people might think it's terrible. My opinion is that it's anything that isn't edifying or anything that drags you down. I realize that it is possible to listen to secular music without it taking over your life, I'm just saying be careful. If you don't realize that Maynard is singing about other religions you might hear it and think "Wow, that's a cool idea, I'm going to subconsciously put that into my way of thinking." It's very easy to be influenced by words even if you think you're just hearing the music. I just encourage everyone to even out what they listen to so that you know you're getting some really good Christian influence too. I'm not bashing anyone just giving my thoughts. You have the freedom to listen to whatever you want to.

Okay, I understand what you are saying here. I'm not familiar with Tool's lyrics outside of their more popular songs (their albums are so expensive...even used!). What I have heard though has been pretty creative. However, I think that it can be more dangerous to listen to contemporary christian bands. Many that I have encountered have theological flaws and questionable views towards christianity.

maynard is my favourite musician because he has an amazing voice and incredible songwriting ability. same goes for the rest of tool... they're all amazing musicians with incredible songwriting abilities. needless to say... their lyrics can be very disturbing and in some cases demonic. lateralus is actually pretty clean. The only song i can think of that could be considered offensive is ticks and leeches, being the only song that has a swear word and the fact that it's extremely angry and wishing pain on someone else. lateralus in general is a huge step lyricaly wise for tool however, considering the horrid lyrics in aenima. i suppose i'm in this trap that you're talking about, but i feel no guilt listening to lateralus or a perfect circle (with the acception of judith). pre-lateralus however is best kept away from, though i still catch myself listening to it...

wow... that's probably the longest post i've ever done...

Thats extremely insensitive. Don't try to act like anyone who isn't a Christian is immoral or satanic. If music is bad its bad for anyone, and you don't have to be Christian to care about being negatively affected.

Now to the thread. I don't see why peopel are so afraid of hearing a song about Buddhism or Hinduism. I love hearing other religions' ideas and comparing them with my own, seeing how different views of the world complement and contradict eachother. I have a little bit of a problem when Maynard starts singing truly anti-christian lyrics but I know hearing him say it won't cause me to stop being Christian. Plus I love Tool as a band. Oh, and there is nothign wrong with the band live, seriously. I've never heard of anyone who has a problem with them. And all music doesnt have to glorify God, not EVERYTHING in life has to be an explicit glorification of God.

...This is what pushes people further away from your religion. Its petty and exclusive to think that Christians are the only ones with morals.

KIND OF messed up? ;)

TOOL is a great band; MJK is very inventive. Lateralus and Aenima are awesome albums.

In defense of DMBfanLongliveStrongBad!, I don't believe that he meant to offend anyone, but was asking a genuine question.

i was. I don't know if he has morals or not. I don't even think i have morals. i strive to be good in God's eyes, but i don't try to be good for the sake of morals.

i was really genuinely asking you why you wouldn't want to be affected by maynards lyrics. i think alot of his lyrics are good, and there's good messages. Some of the messages are not so good. I have reasons why i don't want to be influenced by some of his lyrics, and i was merely asking what your reasons were.
