Most of us fight the ongoing battle of clutter. In the 21st century, we simply have too much stuff. On a morning news show, a best-selling author gave the following tips for keeping the home in tip-top shape: “purge, organize and maintain.” These actions will give you the edge as you de-clutter your living spaces.

Do we also need to “purge” some items that might clutter our soul? Negative music, tasteless Internet searches, TV shows that do not edify. Can we “purge” our lives and our homes of these anti-Christ clutter issues so that family members can make progress in their quest for personal holiness?

Can clutter affect our vision for reaching others? Absolutely! When we spend too much time gathering, cleaning, and organizing our silly stuff rather than taking time to reach the lost and the least, it’s time to for a spiritual housecleaning. De-clutter the clutter for the love of God.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. (Hebrews 12:1 NIV)

I recently went on a Mission Trip that used that Scripture throughout the week. The week's over-reaching theme was baggage and letting that go. The leaders talked about how the only way to grow closer to God is to lay down what it holding us back at the feet of Jesus. There were things like pride and vanity, but there was also materialism and obedience. Getting rid of the clutter in our minds and laying that baggage down is the only way to forge a deeper relationship with Christ. I know that for me personally, I rely on my phone way too much. I've been getting better at it, but it's still something I struggle with. I have, however, been making some progress, and even that little bit of progress has paid off. I can see God more clearly now, and there is light at the end of the proverbial tunnel of clutter that we may not always see.
