Our interpret the scripture like you have and get it massively wrong!
OK @Antig, lets have your interpretation of the scripture I posted.

1Cor14v4One who speaks in a tongue edifies himself; but one who prophesies edifies the church.

Tongues was for the Apostles. To spread the Gospel.

Today, tongues is abused through the work of satan.

Anyone thought about diffrent kinds of "tongues" ? One, those that were spoken by apostles were the languages so people could understand. Second the ones that Spirit gives us utterance to pray, those we should not use if it's not being interpret, those that we should use to edify ourselves, when our Spirit prays for us to the LORD. And then we have the satan's version of dadadašadadaaa, which is a copy of the true gift, babelling where all church shaking and falling on floor, which is clearly not Biblical. Thoughts?

Antig:

First and foremost one needs the meaning of what the word tongues means as used in scriptures.
Tongues are languages, not bablings of sounds. In Acts 2 the answer is given plainly as to what the word tongues means.

Act 2:4-6 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.

Being in a pentecostal church right now (where ive grew up in), as someone who truly believe what you are posting, makes it hard for me to actually worship. I see it ALOT, and it worst if this was address to someone who does the "tongues". Lack of discerning, and just flesh wanted to have some sort of "supernatural" gift beyond the wisdom that God already set before us in His Word.

I told my sister, who does it as well, that I didn't believe that the "tongues" going on in the church are of God, and she was FURIOUS.

Sigh.

OK, @Antig, lets have chapter and verse to show where tongues was for the apostles only.
Today, tongues is abused through the work of satan.
That has no more relevance than me saying that bible teaching is abused through the work of Satan today.

it seems the premise hinges on the line "shun profane and vain babblings" with particular emphasis on the word "babblings" which then jumps directly to the tower of babel event invoked by the use of this word.

So what is this word the KJV translates as "vain babblings"? The word is "kenophonia" and it is from "kenos" and "phoneo". kenos (G2756) is a word that means "empty" and phoneo (G5455) means "to call out" but it doesn't have to be intelligible for example when the rooster crowed after Peter denied Jesus 3 the word is "phoneo". it comes from the word phone (G5456) which simply means a sound and ultimately we get our word "phoneme" from (or phonetics, phonics, etc..) This word is not related to the word for the event of the Tower of Babel. In the Septuagint the word used for "Babel" is sugchusis (G4799) and it means confusion.

there is nothing wrong with the translation "babblings" but it does create this false connection to the event at the tower of babel but it is not and Paul is not addressing tongues. Read "vain babblings" as "empty talk" which theoretically could apply to the improper use of the tongues but it is not directly targeting it.

God supernaturally splits languages from an event where people were essentially trying to be gods themselves; a selfish and counter-god agenda. He then supernaturally closes this gap through an event that unifies and gives glory to God. It is the this latter focus that God is interested in and where the HS operates. No doubt there is abuse, there certainly was in the Church at Corinth, but abuse is not a reason to reject the biblical operation of the HS or how Paul puts it not to forbid speaking in tongues. What we should be looking for is how does it follow the biblical use? how does it edify? how does it bring unity? how does it glorify God? In those answers their source should be revealed or exposed.
