TONGUES
This seems to be a subject of much controversy in the religion of today. This one says it is because the scriptures are not read as the apostle Paul said do.
2Ti 2:14-16 Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord 1- that they strive not about words to no profit but (causing) to the subverting of the hearers
2- Study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
3- But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.
2Ti 2:17-18 And their word will eat as does a canker: Of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus;Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some.
2Ti 2:19 Nevertheless the foundation of God stands sure, having this seal, The Lord knows them that are His. And, Let every one that names the name of Christ depart from iniquity.
2Ti 2:20-21 But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honor, and some to dishonor. If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honor, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work.
2Ti 2:22-26 Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart. But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strife.
And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.
Vain babbling s, useless words that can not be understood. Any one who has been in one of the Denominational buildings when this is happening will understand exactly what the apostle Paul was saying.
It is best to start this discussion by first defining what the word, tongues, means in the scriptures.
By beginning with Genesis we find the following given.
Gen_11:7 Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech.
Notice that at that time the Earth had but one language. That language was confused, that is, their became many new languages; tongues. Continuing with Acts
The first place in the, so-called New Testament is here.
Mar_16:17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
Here it is saying that they speak in a new language.
The Coming of the Holy Spirit
Act 2:1- 22 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. There came various languages speaking to Them. When this occurred it is told to us this.
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other language (tongues), as the Spirit gave them utterance.
And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.
Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. And they were all amazed and marveled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galileans?
And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?
Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaean, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia,Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes,
Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.
And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What means this?
Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine.
Peter's Sermon at Pentecost
But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, You men of Judaea, and all you that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words:For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day.
But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke: The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come: And it shall come to pass, whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
You men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by Him in the midst of you, as you yourselves also know:
Here then is what the meaning of tongues is according to the Bible scriptures. It is the speaking in known given languages which occurred back in Genesis at the Tower of Babel. They could not understand each others language and thus confusion. This is what happens today in the Denominations that do this speaking in tongues.
1Co_13:1 Though I speak with the languages of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
2Co_11:21 I speak as concerning reproach, as though we had been weak. Howbeit where soever is bold, (I speak foolishly,) I am bold also.
Gal_3:15 Brethren, I speak after the manner of men; Though it be but a man's covenant, yet if it be confirmed, no man disannulls, or adds thereto.
Congregations that babble tell you they have translators. Who taught the translators? Does God teach confusion? Hardly; but man does. It should be obvious by now that babbling in unknown languages is not of God. Each one in the book of Acts heard what was said in their own language, not in one translation by one person.
May God grant through the Holy Spirit understanding about this issue.
