I attend a charismatic sorta church, but being as I'm fairly new to that sort of church scene, I don't understand everything that's going on. I don't really understand why some people say they started talking in tongues after they were saved? Does this mean they can suddenly speak another actual language? (My friend was telling me she was saved at the age of two, and started speaking in tongues when she was four.. but the only tongue I know of that she uses is a "secret language" she and her best friend used to use... like pig latin sorta.. as if every kid doesn't do that!) And people have told me that if someone speaks in tongues, it's only okay if it's also being translated. And when are these gifts received? Ater being saved, or baptism?

thats a tough question, and everyone i have asked comes up with a different answer. my suggestion for you, and myself for that matter.... get a concordance and look up every passage where tongues is mentioned and read them. study them. read them in context. pray that God show you the answer... because you are gonna get a billion different answers from people.

layne,

what you want to find out is actually the Baptism of the Holy Spirit as in Acts 2.

When a person is born again into God's family, the Holy Spirit comes in to reside in him. So rest assured as long as you are born again (ie saved) you have the Holy Spirit in you. You can liken it to having the well of water inside you springing up into eternal life.

But after one is born again, there is what Pentecostals and charismatics believe as a subsequent experience called the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.

What is this experience? Just read Acts 2 and all the subsequent accounts of how believers received the Holy Spirit and spoke in tongues.

How is this different from being born-again/saved?

Well people have described it in different ways:
• One is drinking water, the other is diving into a swimming pool.
• In one case the Holy Spirit is resident in you, in the other he becomes President over you.
• One is a well of water springing up into eternal life, the other is rivers of water gushing out from your belly.

In short, the Holy Spirit has more of you when you receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, becos you now yield more to him.

How does one know he has received the Baptism of the Holy Spirit? Like being born again/saved, it may be a very dramatic thing with all sorts of emotions, visions even. Or it can be a very quiet personal thing with not much 'fanfare'.

But Pentecostals and the majority of charismatics believe that THE proof or outward sign is the ability to speak in tongues, as in Acts.

So, how does one receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit and speak in tongues?

Well, that's another topic altogether but I just wanna say first that:
1. As long as you are saved/born again, you CAN receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.
2. As long as you want it and are willing to act in faith, you can receive and speak in tongues.

Those are the only 2 requirements. It has nothing to do with how holy or spiritual you are!

God bless!

ps: the born-again experience and the Baptism of the Holy Spirit can occur simultaneously too, as in Cornelius' case. Some people have spoken in tongues the moment they were saved. But usu for most Christians, its a subsequent experience that happens later (esp after the find out abt it and want it).

I had this very same questions 6 years ago and I ask my Dad about it and all he said was

2 cor 5:7 For we walk by faith, not by sight

Hebrews 11:1....Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

But that wasn'y enough for me and I ask my brother who is in semenary school at that time about

John 4:23-24 But the hour cometh [but has not happened yet]and now is, When the true worshippers shall worship the Father in Spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. 24 God is Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

As he explained he defined Spirit and Soul

God is only Spirit
People are spirit, soul and flesh 2 thes 5:23

spirit-intellect
Ephesians 4:23 And be renewed by the spirit of your mind.

soul --emotions...taste, sight, touch, feel, hear
Ps 57:6 my soul is bowed down
Song of Solmon 3:2......... I will seek him whom my soul loveth ........
2cor 10:4 For are weapons of are warfare are not carnal............
Job 3:20 bitter in the soul
Psalms 107:5 soul hungery and thirsty

Soulish Worship is what the house of Israel Ex 4:30-31 had but are Lord has given us a better better hope/ promise than them

We have the Holy Spirit living in side of us .....John14:17 vs HS in the old testament would come and go and just come upon them not in themlike in Ezek 2:2,3:24 Ps 51:11

But to Top off this I talked to my Father in law about this verse

1 cor 13:8 Love never faileth:but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away
1cor 13:10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which in part shall be done away.

Big question is what is "which is perfect is come "

My Father in Law said that it meant Christ during the second coming but my Brother explain that in the Greek IT IS A PERFECT THING and that HIS GOD was not a Thing...

So in John 1:1 In the begining was the Word, and the word was with God and the word was God.

So if the Word {aka Bible} was this thing these Gifts like Tongues, discering Spirits, phophecy, interpretation of tongues were needed in the beginning of the church since they did not have the Bible to check out what the speaker was saying thus a check and balances that God created in the early church... and will happen again during the tribulation as a sign during that time.

But Till that Time where God of peace sanctify your whole Spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ at the Rapture were we UP-GRADE this tent to a mansion

GOD WILL BE WITH YOU IF YOU ARE HIS

O yeah Acts is a transitional book between HOUSE OF Law and HOUSE OF Grace

Acts 2:5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. 6 Now when this was heard abroad, the multitude came together and were comfounded, because thta every man heard them speak in his own language!!!

do you see that One man spoke in tongues and more than one nation understood that's a miricle[spelling error].

what were they saying to other devout men

vs 11 .....speaking the wonderful works of God.

That is that he died for are sins so that we can get to know him
And he arose on the third day and right know is on the right hand of are FATHER in the flesh

awesome

Dear Layne, what a blessing to find someone who is really thirsty and open. If you are interested, I can give you the phone number of a friend of mine who seems to have the gift facilitating receiving the baptism in the Holy Spirit with the evidence as speaking in other tongues as the Spirit give the utterance.

Hi

I was saved a long while ago. (Years)
But nobody ever told me about tongues..
Then I joined shophar.. Which told me the truth.. Still it didn't come quickly.

Go and read 1 Cor 12-14 (I hope that's it! else it's 2 Cor)
Also type in something like "praying in the spirit" or "pray in tongues" in www.google.com

I pray in tongues. Sometimes it's easier than other times. Sometimes Satan (Or probably just my human nature) comes in the way. It's difficult at home since my parents don't believe in this so I have to be alone.

Pray in tongues is something available to all people that are filled with the holy spirit.
Seem like we don't all have the same amount of holy spirit.. It think this is probably cause we don't allow the holy spirit in.. (off topic sorry)
Anyways if you are a christian you can do this.
Remember the spirit isn't going to move your mouth. Well not open it atleast.
Just try to let go.

Or let me just tell you how I started.
It was some time and I still didn't get it right.
We had a church service. and the spirit really took over.
Anyways my cell leader (good friend also) was standing next to me.
I told him that I really like to pray in tongues but it's somehow not working.
We then prayed asking the holy spirit to fill me and let me pray in tongues.
He then started to pray in tongues and said I must follow. So I treid.
But when I opened my mouth and treid to speak what I spoke I couldn't..
My mouth just started to bable somthing else weird. It was really weird. I couldn't really hear myself since I was crying :-D I just now I was repeating something over and over and I had no control over what I said.
After a while it stopped.
That was about a month and a half-ago.
I still sometimes struggle with this. But I keep praying.

KEEP PRAYING!! IT'S A VERY POWERFULL WEAPON!

Here is a response I gave to someone else on the issue. It helped him to have a better understanding and he's speaking in tongues now on a regular basis and seeing quite a few changes in his walk with God as a result.

Please feel free to ask as many questions as you want. I don't necessarily know everything, but being as this is a gift I have, I do know a lot. You are also welcome to visit the Charasmatic forum if you want the view of others who practice this gift at http://www.christianforums.com/f122

It is my understanding that there are 2 types of tongues. Which means, that the Holy Spirit, using your tongue, speaks in a language you don't know and have never studied.

1. A language that someone, somewhere on earth would understand in the natural. We see this in Acts 2:4 where the disciples along with several others are filled with the Holy Spirit. As part of this infilling they began to speak in different and foreign languages they had never studied. As a result, in every dialect within the city that day, was heard the glories of God.

2.A language of Angels. I believe this one can be split in to 2 parts.
A. Prayer between you and God only. This is for your edification. For you to be made stronger.Paul refers to this in 1 Cor 14:2, 4

B. A message for the body that needs someone with the gift of interpretation to interpret. Paul refers to this one in 1 Cor 14:1, 3, 5-13. Reading the whole chapter is a good idea.

WHAT'S THE POINT?

The point of tongues as described in #1 is, I believe to be mostly a witnessing tool to someone of another language who needs to know Jesus. That is basically what is seen in Acts 2 . There were about 3000 souls added to the church that day (v41)

I had a friend, who when waking up from surgery was approached by the nurse and asked how long he had spoken Hebrew. He told her he did not speak Hebrew. She then told him that while under anesthetic, he spoke fluent Hebrew, and the surgeon, who was Jewish, understood every word. While being operated on my friend witnessed to his doctor.

I've also heard of other situations where missionarys spoke in languages they had never studied and people were saved because it was in their language.

The point of tongues as described in #2A, is to build you up spiritually, which may also manifest physically. Such as your feeling depressed, you allow the Holy Spirit to pray through you in your heavenly language, He requests what is needed, you are strengthened, and you feel uplifted spiritually and physically.

We can see this in Romans 8:26-28 (Amplified) "the Holy Spirit comes to our aid and bears us up in our weakness; for we do not know what prayer to offer nor how to offer it worthily as we ought, but the Spirit Himself goes to meet our supplication and pleads in our behalf with unspeakable yearnings and groanings too deep for utterance.

And He Who searches the hearts of men knows what is in the mind of the Holy Spirit, what His intent is, because the Spirit intercedes and pleads before God in behalf of the saints according to and in harmony with God's will.

We are assured and know that God being a partner in their labor , all things work together and are fitting into a plan for good to and for those who love God and are called according to His design and purpose".

The trinity, working together for your benefit is in full view in these 3 verses. When we don't know how to pray, the Holy Spirit, praying through us, intercedes for us. The one who searches the hearts of men (Jesus), understands what the Spirit is requesting through you. And then God, who is in partnership with them (Holy Spirit and Jesus) works everything together for good to those who love Him, and fits it into His design and purpose.

This form of tongues can and should be used at any time. You can pray out loud or you can pray silently. When witnessing to a Muslim once I prayed silently in tongues the whole time. And each step of the way the Holy Spirit directed.

You can pray in tongues when you are in need physically, spiritually, or mentally. When your feeling weak and see the possibilities of walking into sin, pray in tongues, you will get the strength you need to overcome

When being like Christ seems too tough and you feel like giving up, pray in your heavenly language and you wll get the strength to persevere.

Pray in your heavenly language when you see you need more love, peace, joy, longsuffering, gentleness, etc. You may not know what to say but the Spirit is never at a loss for words.

Pray in tongues when your overwhelmed by God's love for you. I sing to Him in tongues all the time.

Wow! Excellent response and informative! I remember hearing about someone who was in a serious car accident. She was competely unconcious but was speaking in tongues. Those around here were dumbfounded as to what was happening. She made a complete recovery and was virtually unharmed. The reporters claimed that she should have never walked away from that accident alive. God is soooo good!

Thank you throughhiseyes,

I've personally known people who this has happened to also. Some friends of mine were in a very serious accident and while they lay there waiting for the ambulance to arrive they sang praise to God. When the ambulance arrived my friends were singing and laughing in the Holy Ghost and the ambulance people thought they were delirious.

They were totally aware of everything though and slightly hurt, they should not even have lived.

HI :)
Brought up in an orthodox family I did not border about tongues speaking. I did not believe much of the tongues people spoke. I quiet remember my peers and I WOULD FAKE IT. then It happened when I became a born-again Christian. As I was reading a book on prayer written by Kenneth Copeland, I received the gift of tongues speaking. I was sort of not bold to exercise it as doubts came all over me. The gift went away unused. Infact I later regretted it. I thank God that by His grace I have now receive my gift again when my elders laid their hands on me at a Holy Spirit Service last year. Now the spirit has grown tremendously that , I find fulfilment in speaking and singing in tongues. The Word says tha t those tht speak in tongues do not speak to men, but in the spirit they speak misteries to God. Amen.
I recmmend you put all doubts away and let the Holy Spirit use you.

i fly,
