  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

He's been in ethical trouble before. Once a corrupt politician, always a corrupt politican.

Isn't this the Clinton Doctrine?

Shouldn't it apply to all politicians? Like Hillary (Rose Law, Whitewater, Cattle Futures) and Teddy (dead girl at bottom of bay), etc., as well as Delay, Gingrich, etc.?

Exactly - thanks for making my point. The operative words are "Mr. Moral Majority-Religious RIGHT". So, you make it sound like the left is corrupt, and everyone KNOWS it, so they're not as bad if one of their side messes up?? LOL. Strawman argument.

Now, I would definitely have to agree with you if he had cheated on his wife, got the mistress pregnant, & forced her to have an abortion. If he, say, took "Oil For Food" money & spent it on palaces & AK-47's, etc. THEN we can talk about how he goes against his religious values, my friend.

He's walked the walk to best of his ability, as we all are trying to do. Making a lapse in judgement is "human". Somehow, I don't think Jesus would condemn him for using some money towards his family. The man ALSO cares about third world countries & has demonstrated this by supporting the Milennium Challenge. Again, look at the person as a WHOLE. Does that mean we overlook someone's mistake? No, but again, we don't crucify them either, lest we be judged for our indignation.

Remember, the only sinless human being ever to exist on this planet was Jesus Christ, which is why He was the perfect Savior for us ALL.

LOLOLOL.

So because no one can be perfect like Jesus Christ, we're supposed to excuse Tom Delay for his mistakes? That's the dumbest thing I've heard in awhile.

Tom Delay could be a saint everywhere else in life--I don't care. Once he harlots out his political powers to special interests, then he has forfeited his job as a politican. He's still qualified to build an orphanage, for all I care--I just don't want him handling MY or other taxpapers' money from now on.

When you fail at a job, then you should lose your job, no matter how good you're at other things. Conversely, I don't care if my plumber sleeps with every prostitute on the block--if he can fix my toilet, that's all I need. On the other hand, if he's perfectly faithful to his wife and three kids but cant remove a hair clog, I'm firing him.

I'm not sure what you're referring to, but this is a thread about Delay. It says it right in the title and everything.

Yep. I'm with Yojimbo, what are you talking about and what does it have to do with Tom Delay being ethically challenged?

It would be dumb if he broke the law, but I haven't seen anything that says he did.

As long as my plumber (Delay) can fix my toilet (liberal legislation), I don't care how many jobs he gives his wife.

Someone referred to Delay as 'once corrupt' always 'corrupt'. If that is the mantra of the left these days, it should apply to people of your party also.

Well, at least partisans can finally admit it. Ethics don't matter as long as you get what you want.

I did. And I agree it should apply to all parties (the Democrats are not "my" party, for the record). But regardless, two wrongs don't make a right. If Delay gets busted for ethics violations, saying "but, but...Bill Clinton did it too" is called 'Tu Quoque'. Doesn't fly outside of kindergarten playgrounds.

This is true. So far, tho, the uproar I have heard is not that it was illegal or unethical, but it just shouldn't be done. Well, fine, if thats the way someone feels, I have no problem. But the charges and insuation go farther than that here in this forum.

If the those with the view that Delay is corrupt, and always will be, believe that that should apply to all unethical, lawbreaking politicians, why don't they go to threads which point out bad behavior by those of the other party (Schumer, Berger, etc.) and make the same statement?

If it turns out that Delay violated any laws or ethics, then he should resign, I have never advocated anything different.

Sorry. Must have missed the memo that said Republicans stand for the right for politicans to be corrupted and to waste the people's money. Maybe you could forward it to me.

Is the lesson you learned from Clinton (both), Schumer, Pelosi, Kennedy, Frank (remember his little trysts in the Congressional locker room?), ad infinitum?

Neither party holds the monopoly on ethics, folks? Can we agree on that?

So let's see...this thread is about Delay's alleged infractions, and your rebuttal, thus far, has been..."What about Clinton, HUH? What about Ted Kennedy, HUH? Oh yeah? What about (repeat ad nauseum)."

As a Republican, I'm not arguing that Delay's crimes proves that the Democrats are the leaders in ethics. I'm saying that if we, as a party, want to be known as a party of ethics, we need to boot Delay out, if these allegations turn out to be true--which they likely will.

My posts would not bear out your claim.

You say 'crime', a minute ago it was legal, but not ethical. Which is it?
I have stated before, and I will do so again once and for all.

A bipartisan Ethics Committee will look at the facts and make a determination. If they find no violations, the matter is closed. If they do, Delay should resign immediately.

This thread started as a Delay thread, but as usual, quickly evolved into a thread replete with 'republicans this' and 'republicans that', 'conservative this' and 'conservative that'. Once that occurs, all bets are off.

I guess you dont remember that Delay removed several members of the ethics committee and replaced them with his own boys.

Reps. Lamar S. Smith (R-Texas) and Tom Cole (R-Okla.) — whose political action committees have contributed to DeLay's legal defense fund. Smith's PAC contributed $5,000 in 2001 and an additional $5,000 between July and September 2004; Cole's gave $5,000 between July and September 2004.

Um, I don't think you understand why DeLay is being investigated by the House Ethics committee. It has nothing to do with any jobs his wife has held.
