Because it isn't science. What's wrong with having only science in a science class? Is biology taught in religion classes?

To tell you the truth, I was first introduced to the concept of evolution in a religion class. However, the professor wasn’t bashing or denying it. He was simply trying to explain how much knowledge we Homo sapiens had acquired over time, considering how young our species is compared to the planet’s old age.

Haha, nice explosion. Yes I agree only to a certain extent. I understand what you are saying, but either way people are going to find something wrong with our school systems. Right now it's that creationism isn't taught in science, next it will be every religion, and then everything will contridict each other. But where you were saying "the people who take the Bible literally..." is what we are trying to explain. Nomatter what you will always find those against the school systems. The truth is that religion isn't a class that has to be taken, science is. Has anyone thought about making relgion manditory? That way students can learn each of the beliefs and pick one. That way the creationist, evolutionist etc..will still get their say...Again just a thought.

But seriously. Science and religion can go side by side, but only to a certain extent. As you might already know, many discoveries and research conducted by modern science contradict many old beliefs of religious institutions ( example evolution, even though it really doesn’t threaten anything). Many people who take the bible literally, will refuse to be exposed to a subject which can put their faith into question, and thus will cause them to feverously deny or attack this contradicting notion.

The problem is there's so many religions, many religions will be shortchanged in the amount of time spent, even if we created a religion class. Personally, I believe that religion is something that one must seek for themselves. If it was taught, the teacher's bias would sure to creep in, even if all it is is not spending as much time on the subject as other religions.

But where to seek it? If school don't teach it, then how will one learn of it? I never even heard of evolution when for fiffteen years in a private school.

Everyone who seeks a higher education will confront the concept of evolution eventually. The concept of creationism will be covered in a person’s belief system. Now, for people to be aware of other creation ideas out of their religion will pretty much be left to themselves to find. I mean, I don’t think a Christian school will allow Islamic, Mormon, Jewish, or even satanic claims of creationism taught in their institution, right?

What people need in order to learn ideas and beliefs different from their own is interest in learning and to seek this information for themselves. Have you ever heard of “spiritual” or “soul” searching? This is a good example of what I’m trying to explain.

I understand what you are saying. But honestly how is someone going to know their are other religions and what to research if they have never even heard of the relgion?

I have to admit, this is hard to answer. If we were to educate the masses about all the regions in the world, we would have to create a library of pure region knowledge or something. The only problem is that there are so many belief systems that it will be difficult to include them all.

PS: Did you know that there is a religion dedicated to Elvis Presley?http://jubal.westnet.com/hyperdiscordia/sacred_heart_elvis.html I thought this was a joke, but after reading some more… I don’t think these people are joking.

No, its definitely a joke. Click on the Jesus link in the title.

I remember first hearing of this on CNN a few years back. It could all be a joke, though. Then again, there are the flying spaghetti monster followers, and that “cult” actually gets donations from people.

The flying spaghetti thing is a good prespective. I mean look how everyone is talking about it on here. I think that's why everyone is donating to it...not that they believe in that "cult" acuatully.

What exactly would that be? I want the freedom to pick my religion. That is why I do argue this point. I am a darwin christian, and happy of it. If I had not been exposed to evolution, I couldn't chose. See, this I learned of religions through school, like so many. This is again why I have to side with my point.

Evolution isn't a religion, that's the point.

Like BigAl said, there simply isn't enough time in school to expose kids to every religion. Religion is a personal issue, and it is one that one must deal with him/herself. Part of it is searching for one that's right oneself.

One doesn't need to know of a religion in order to find it. There are a lot of resources out there about religion. Google, wiki, local churches and libraries all hold lots of information about religion.

It's a difficult task, but who says finding a religion should be easy? Evolution teaches science, but religion teaches you how to save your soul.

As for your experiences, not being exposed to evolution whill affect your school/career choices. Not being exposed to Paganism really doesn't have any affect on you (unless Paganism is correct, then there might be a problem).
