Tithing would seem to be counterproductive. There are those who can't afford 10% of their gross or net income. And there are those who would find 10% to be chump change. Sacrificial giving would seem to be a better option. Give what you can afford and add just a bit more. And depend on God for support; not the result of some ear-tickling tithing sermon.

Isn't the tithe Old Covenant / Old Testament?

Yes. And the whole idea of tithing as a NT concept came about because the some of the early church "fathers" declared that they were the priesthood commissioned by God and that the faithful should pay tithes to them just as the priests in Levitical times. The problem is that Christ commissioned us all as royal priests with a duty to spread the Gospel. The Church is not an organization...it is the people of God. Just as the need to sacrifice bulls and goats was abolished with the New Covenant, so was the singular point of financial tribute to God.

Perfectly explained by Luke 21:2-4 where the poor widow gave two coins. It wasn't much compared to the riches of the others around her, but it was all that she had to give. It was more about the intention of giving than the amount.

One thing to keep in mind too is that ancient Israel at the time they entered the promised land had no centralized government/monarchy, therefore no taxes. The Levitical priesthood/temple was the closes thing they had to a government and therefore tithe functioned as their taxes to keep the theocratic system functioning. Levites couldn't own land, therefore they couldn't support themselves and needed the other 11 tribes to keep them fed.

I disagree with the premise that Christians now are required to follow the Torah tithe requirements. We don't have a temple nor a Levitical priesthood. We DO need wisdom to meditate on how the Torah prescribed charity and what we can do now to fulfil that spirit of the law.

therefore tithe functioned as their taxes .

Yep. There was no separation of religion and state. "Tithing" was taxation, plain and simple.

Besides taxes, given where interest rates, dividends, and expected returns on investments are today - anyone expecting a 10% return on someone else's income is either deluding themselves or trying to run a racket.
