Tired of Homosexuality being linked with Theater

I am 100% Heterosexual. Love women, Very attracted to women. But one of my hobbies that interest me the most is Acting, and unfortunately... there are alot of homosexuals in the theatre. Like it or not. Now, I am not judgemental, Not homophobic- Infact, Working with gay people is the same is working with straight- what they do with their personal life is their buisness. What I don't like, is how people have associated theatre with homosexuality. That gets on my nerves. I am a straight, male actor. I love Broadway, and love to preform in Musicals. I see this as a hobby and I think, people shouldn't be judgemental in saying that all men that are in theatre- are Gay. Because we aren't. What do you guys think?

I can totally relate. I, too, am straight and in theater. I don't sing + dance in musicals (unrelated side note... I just get nervous with those on stage. Acting doesn't make me nervous though...). The stereotypes do get a bit old, I agree. Do you think there's a way to fix that?

Steriotypes have a tendency to stick about like glue... Its a shame, but its something we have to live with. The people who know you will know that your not gay, and they will therfore know that not everyone in the theatre is gay, and so we can make a small mark on the steriotype.

It is most definitely easier to be female in the theatre. Stereotypes aside, I fell in love with theater because "theatre types" are the most encouraging, the most open and honest, and the most accepting people I have ever met.

In my experience, many male working actors and lifelong theatre workers are gay. I am not sure why and I really don't care. They, as well as everybody else, accept me for who I am and treat me like family. Maybe that is why a great deal of male theater people are gay...because they are accepted and allowed to be who they are as well. I dunno.

But you are right, most people think male in theatre=gay.

Funny this is mentioned actually....
In our community theater group, there's a guy, who happens to be in the military, who gets a lot of flack from his fellow military pals about doing theater. He's tried to recruit some of them to help out with tech work and stuff, but they won't because they think it's "gay"

Funny thing is that this guy is a happily married Christian....nothing gay about him! Ugh...

I really try to hide my interest from others as much as I can. You don't see me having Phantom of the Opera posters all over my apartment, or any of that stuff. I am a secret thespian. I have a strong interest, but I come out and do it once in a while. I haven't gotten any trouble being called "gay"--because people know I am not.

But others that have just met me, I don't just come out and say, "Hey I love Broadway!"-- Because, I don't want to be slapped with the label of being homosexual...anyway.
