Comments from Pope Francis released by the Vatican last week about the possibility of blessing same-sex unions sparked debate among Church leaders.

In response to dubia, formal requests for clarity, sent by five cardinals about the Church’s stance on blessing homosexual unions, among other topics, the Pope told them that “we must not lose … pastoral charity” and that “pastoral prudence must adequately discern whether there are forms of blessing, requested by one or more persons” that would not “transmit a mistaken conception of marriage.”

The Pope rejected the concept of homosexual marriage and said dioceses and other Church structures should not establish official “rites or procedures” for such blessings, but he kept open the possibility of some sort of blessing subject to the pastoral prudence of a priest.
