I have recently discovered the Cross Stitch/Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. It's fantastic, and has renewed my interest in time travel books. Can anyone recommend other books of this genre, but aren't actually "Time-travel romances". Even though Cross Stitch has romance, it kinds of goes beyond that, IYKWIM. Something with a good historical basis would be good. Also, only travelling to the past, not the future. Any suggestions?

I was thinking about this....you know the book 'Journey to the centre of the earth,' by Jules Verne? It doesn't involve time travel....but, you're able to see a lot of stuff concerning prehistoric times...I was not sure if you were interested in the actual concept of time travel OR the concept of people from one age witnessing the life of another age, which is what this book is abt. I don't want to go into too much detail cos it might spoil the book for you (if you haven't already read it, that is :). Anyway, that's my suggestion.

Connie Willis' books are excellent - definitely the best of this genre. She has (more or less) the same characters going back to different periods: my favourite is Doomsday Book, set in the 1300s, but To Say Nothing of the Dog (set in the 1880s and 1940s) is also very good.

Just a word of warning - they do get quite emotionally intense.

Thanks for that, I will look into her books.
Were you refering to what "IYKWIM" stands for, or my comments previous to that? IYKWIM= If you know what I mean; by my comment previous to it, I meant books that are more historical than romance, but that it's still good if they have romance in them (basically, if there are half-dressed lovers embracing on the cover, it's not really what I'm after :) ).

Ainuhina, thank-you for mentioning "Timeline". I've seen the movie, but had forgotten that it was a book too, one that I meant to read ages ago.

You've all been a great help, guys.

Pocket & the Pendant - it's a podcast novel - but it is all finished so you can get all the episodes on your iPod or PC, or buy the CD or printed copy.

Not so much time travel as time *stoppage* (is that a word?)

Good stuff......
